■WARSAW
■_______________________
I Both good news and bad tumbles upon
■ from Poland these days. The good news
■ from the Teatr Wielki’s revival (Sept. 9) of
■ its elaborate 1985 Macbeth included Jerzy
I Artysz’ rock-solid baritone, firm, round and
I seamless, in the title role. Ryszard Morka’s
■ young bass rang out bravely as Banco,
I though the voice has not quite settled in,
land he is innocent of stage presence. The
I bad news is that Yugoslav soprano Radmila
iBakocevic is not the next Zinka Milanov.
I The top of her otherwise toneless voice
[emerged huge but forced, uncertain of
I pitch, as Lady Macbeth. Her fringed shawl,
beads and bobbed hair fit her intense Theda
Bara acting but not anything else. Roman
I Wegrzyn shouted Macduff.
This was a “more is less” production.
Though Verdi calls for each coven of
witches to enter separately, Warsaw
dropped twenty-eight of them from the flies
on wobbly Peter Pan halters. (Their
screams were heartfelt.) Cliches from 500
years of Scottish decorative arts
abounded, from halberds, spears, helmets,
maces, raw wood and raw stone and colors
of silver, slate, gray and black to hyperac-
tive drawbridges, torches, already dulled
battle banners, doublets and heraldry. All
this apparatus matched the stolid, lumber-
ing stage action. JOHN BRIGGS
