Paul Carrington(Houston), This chapter installed new officers in March and
the new president is Kenneth R, Duff, MD, The chapter has four vice-presi-
dents. On February 17th Dr. Frank Vandiver, president of Texas A&M University,
was honoree and guest speaker at the chapter's 45th Annual George Washington
Birthday Dinner. Vandiver, selected by the chapter to receive its annual
Washington award, is a well-recognized educator, author, and university
president. His speciality in the academic world is military history.
Cradle pf Texas(Lake Jackson). In January these compatriots conducted their
Douglass G. High Oration Contest, and they gave their winner a $100 scholar-
ship. Members met in February at Dr. Vernon Zeitler's home to conduct
a planning session for their upcoming hosting of the 93rd Annual Meeting,
March 11-12. It is apparent, in the editor's opinion, that this chapter
planned well at their February meeting and other sessions they held.
Dallas Chapter. John W. Clark received his 50-Year Pin in Febraury while
eleven other compatriots received their 25-Year SAR membership pin, they
are: Herschel W. Anderson; Ross Boothe, Jr.; David Brune; COL Joe M. Hill, Jr.;
Robert A. Kittrell; Bruce Mayer; William R, Montgomery; Robert E. Peterson;
COL Norwood G. Richardson; and Howard Scott. Kim Davis, winner of the chapter
D. G. High Contest, received $200 plus a Bronze Medal; and Ted Price, second
place winner, earned $150 plus a certificate. There are now 345 members in
this chapter. In 1988 this chapter will maintain a "S.A.R. 1988 PERFECT
ATTENDANCE RECORD" and a "near perfect attendees" lists. There were 14
members from this chapter at the 93rd Annual Meeting at Lake Jackson.
Freedom Chapter(Conroe), At their February 26th meeting this chapter pre-
sented their first Law Enforcement Commedation Medal.
Hea t of Texas(Salado). During 1987-88 this chapter experienced a 64%
increase in membership and had 132 members at the end of the year. This
tremendous growth propelled the chapter from the seventh largest in the state
to the fourth largest. In January Dist 4V-P Hightower installed new officers
including Dr, David Yeilding as president and Hartzell O. Stephens as secre-
tary-treasurer, In April the chapter bestowed Bronze Citizenship Awards upon
six outstanding area high school students, three ROTC medals, and one Heroism
upon an elementary student who saved the life of a friend shortly after
Christmas 1987. In addition, the compatriots and guests attending met and
heard Alma Filimona, chapter Douglass G. High Oration winner and entrant at
Lake Jackson, give her moving oration(see a chapter photograph, page 9).
Patrick Henry(Austin). On February 20th this chapter conducted a joint meeting
with Austin area DAR chapters honoring George Washington's birthday. The
Honorable Steven B, Derounian, retired justice of the New York State Supreme
Court, spoke on the topic, "The Republic--Reflections." Those in attendance
reported that the speech was one of the best patriotic speeches heard in a
long time in the Austin area. Compatriot Frank A. Gibson is the newly
installed president of this chapter.
Hill Country(Kerrville). This chapter's membership reached its goal of in-
creasing its number of compatriots to 50 and then the chapter raised its goal
to 55' That's the spirit of TXSSAR' Karl Biermann, from Comfort, won the
chapter's Douglass G. High Oration Contest and received a $100 bond and each
runners-up(2 of them) received a $50 bond, David Bradshaw, of Tivy High
School, won the chapter Eagle Scout award and received a $100 bond plus a
Bronze Good Citizenship Medal. 7
