Calhoun spoke on the future
of the NSSAR, and Reg. Gen.
Brandau spoke on Leadership
in the NSSAR. VP Gen.
Bobby Kurth invited each
compatriot to attend the South
Central District Meeting in
Dallas in two weeks. Alt.
Trustee Clell Sechrest spoke on
the NSSAR Museum and the
Library Fund at NSSAR
Headquarters.
Registrar James A. York stated
we had 141 delegates and 77
guests in attendance at our
Annual Meeting.
State officers and state
committee chairmen filed their
respective reports. Chairman
of the Resolution Committee
presented three resolutions that
were adopted. They were (1)
Respect for the National Flag,
(2) Thanks to Mrs. L. T.
Jordan for her loyal support to
the Texas Society through the
years, and (3) Courtesy Reso-
lution to the Independence
Chapter for hosting the Annual
Meeting.
At lunch, Pres. Hightower
honored James and Barbara
York, Robert F. Ritchie, and
James L. Boone with special
plaques for their outstanding
service to the Texas Society.
Compatriot Graham H. Martin
conducted the Oration Contest
among the five regional winners
with Ms. Julie Curington from
Athens, Texas, being judged the
winner. Compatriot Richard
Robinett honored our Eagle
Scout winner Andrew
Andreason from the Patrick
Henry Chapter.Third Session
Registrar James York
announced the winner of the
election for District VII Vice
President to be B. Rice Aston.
Constitution and By-Laws
Committee Chairman Robert
F. Ritchie presented the
amendments as outlined in the
last Texas Compatriot for
consideration by the delegates.
The first amendment to be
considered, proposed by
Compatriot Graber Kidwell and
amended by Madison Wright,
was adopted after discussion.
Art. XXVI, Section 1, Patriots
Fund, now reads: Funds dedi-
cated to projects within the state
of Texas shall be not less than
70 percent of the available funds.
The second amendment, pro-
posed by the Council of
Chapter Presidents, was
adopted by voice vote. Art. VI,
Section 1 now includes: now
members of this Society and the
Chairman of the Council of
Chapter Presidents.
The third amendment was to
amend Article VIII, Section IV,
to read: Said officers shall be
elected to serve the same fiscal
year as the state officers. After
discussion, the amendment
passed. It was understood that
the chapters would move as
quickly as possible, but no later
than next year.
The fourth amendment was to
change the By-Laws to change
the title of Senior Vice
President to President Elect,
and to add the wording: The
President Elect shall automati-
cally become President at the
conclusion of his term as Presi-
dent Elect. If two-thirds of the
delegates at the annual meetingreject the President Elect, he
shall not serve as President the
next year. After much discus-
sion, the amendment was
approved.
Chairman Vernon Zeitler,
Patriots Fund Projects
Committee, presented motions
to approve the following pro-
jects: (1) a sum not to exceed
$150 to cover expenses of the
Eagle Scout to the State Con-
vention, (2) a sum not to
exceed $800 to cover expenses
of the Douglass G. High Ora-
tion Contest winner to the
National Congress, (3) a sum
not to exceed $500 for ROTC
medals, (4) $500 to purchase
twenty videotapes of the SAR
history, (5) a sum not to exceed
$750 for a marker for the first
President of the Texas Society
in Austin. After discussion, all
projects were approved. Other
projects not listed here were
not approved.
Compatriot David Crymes in-
vited all to attend the Annual
Meeting for 1991 in Abilene,
Texas.
Compatriot Graham Martin
asked that the delegates ap-
prove their invitation to hold
the 1992 Annual Meeting in
Tyler. The delegates approved
this motion.
The President General's Recep-
tion was held at 6:30 p.m.
After dinner, the Patriot Medal
was presented to Compatriots
Fred F. Eubanks, Jr., Billy E.
Hightower, Hartzell O.
Stephens, and Madison B.
Wright, Jr. Chapter awards
were presented. Pres.
Hightower presented the Law
Enforcement Medal to District
