mendation Medal was presented to Captain Leonard J. Higgins of the Hous-
ton Fire Department in recognition of his long and faithful service to our
community and to his fellow fire fighters. We are proud to be able to honor
citizens like these who are so deserving. Past President General Dr. George
H. Brandau was our keynote speaker and Chancellor General B. Rice Aston
installed the officers. We are very proud of these two former Chapter Presi-
dents. And finally, President L. Van Short was honored with his much de-
sired Past President's Pin which capped his two years of extraordinary ser-
vice to Paul Carrington. Many Thanks, Van.

FORT WORTH - In the photo below Compatriots Truitt and Manning
present Johnathan D Knight, the Chapter's winning Eagle Scout contestant.
It was noted that Johnathan wears the BSA Heroism Badge for the water
rescue of his baby sister. The Chapter welcomed new Compatriots James
Alderman, James King and Dr. Robert Devine: and had Compatriots Sid
I Iolleman DDS transfer from New Mexico and Howard Johnson from Ne-
vada. Howard is a Past State President of the Nevada Society. Genealogist
Donald Goodman also is working with several other prospects.

The Chapter recognized Nathan Sanders as the Chapter's Knight Essay
winner, Nathan is a home schooled senior from Weatherford, TX.
President Robert Truitt assisted in welcoming new citizens at a natural-
ization ceremony in Fort Worth, the DAR Chapters help organize the cer-
emony. The Chapters School Poster winner is Karina Gonzales and she will
be recognized at an awards assembly in the spring. February 17th several
members were guests of the DAR at their annual George Washington lun-
cheon.
The Chapter lost a long time Compatriot John O. Tucker in January. We
have expressed our sympathy to his wife.
In February the Chapter elected the following for the 2000-2001year: Presi-
dent Robert Truitt (2nd term), Vice-Pres. Randall Reagan, Secretary James
Alderman, Treasurer Donald Pray, Registrar-Genealogist Donald Goodman
and Chaplain Gordon Ball. Compatriot James King was appointed Sgt. at
Arms. Past President Dr. Ed Maddox DVM was awarded the Meritorious
Service Medal for his many years of service to the Chapter.
10 PANHANDLE - PLAINS
AMARILLO - At the January 2000 Chapter meeting, new Compatriot
Ed McNeely was welcomed. Dallas Chapter member Ray Hale was recog-
nized as a dual member. The guest speaker was Mrs Donna Littlejohn, Direc-
tor of Library Services for the Amarillo Public Library. She told the Chapter
about the new public library and its Genealogical Collection.
In January, George West of the Golden Spread contingent of the TXSSAR
Militia made a presentation on Medical Practices during the Revolutionary
War to fifth grade classes at Amarillo Elementary School. Compatriot West
did a similar presentation for the DAR Chapter in Hereford in February.
New officers were elected in February; Judge Risley will serve as Chap-
ter President, Dr. Allen Early as Vice President, JC Claughton as Secretary,
Bill Harper as Treasurer, Henry Norrid as Chaplain and Fred Mooney as
Registrar.

AUSTIN - The Austin area Chapters of the DAR met in a joint meeting
with the Patrick Henry Chapter SAR on February 12, 2000 for a luncheon at
the Austin Women's Club to celebrate the Birthday of George Washington.TXSSAR President, Compatriot Frank Gibson gave a musical program
with the early Colonial music.
The Patrick Henry SAR color guard under the leadership of Compa-
triot Donald Morgan presented the flags. In the photograph, left to right:
Compatriots Patrick Henry Luckett, William N. Todd Ill, Donald W. Mor-
gan, James F. Allen, Raymond B. Merrill and Roger J. Gaby.

DENTON - Compatriot Samuel Haynes was the speaker at the Janu-
ary Chapter meeting. He discussed his family's history. The topic in Feb-
ruary and March was Political Scandals and this topic was presented in
two parts by Compatriot Dr. William Vaughn. Dr. Vaughn is a retired
History Teacher from the University of North Texas. New officers were
elected in the March meeting; President - James Johnson, Vice President -
Samuel Haynes, Secretary - Doyle Holder, Treasurer - William P Vaugn,
Registrar - Gerald S Brenholtz, Historian - James Baird, and Chaplain -
Thomas D Bailey.
31 HILL COUNTRY
KERRVILLE - In the January Chapter meeting, Law Enforcement
Commendation Medals were given to two Sheriff's Deputies and the
Kerrville Police Officer who run the DARE Program in the Kerr County
schools. Compatriot Robert Schmerbeck III, Sister Marge Novak, Glenn
McGinnis and Cecil Atkisson were awarded Outstanding Citizen Awards
as well. Mr. Atkisson also received a Flag Certificate.
The Chapter changed meeting locations in February to the Inn of the
Hills in the Bluebonnet Room but the meeting returned to the YO Ranch
Resort Hotel in March. The Chapter looked forward to the visit of newly
installed TXSSAR President, Dick Arnold at their March meeting.
33 CRADLE OF TEXAS
CLUTE - The January Chapter meeting saw the awarding of merito-
rious service awards to Compatriots Arnold Seidule and Don Pugh. The
Speakers were Gary and Doris Gatton. They gave an informative talk on
the dress, life and times of Brazoria County in the 1830s. The couple is
active in the Austin Town Festival. Officers were installed: President -
Arnold Seidule, Vice President - Don Pugh, Sec-Treasurer - Bob Faulkner,
Genealogist - Clell Sechrist and Chaplain - Roger Byler. President Seidule
was awarded the WG McAlexander badge and neck ribbon. He then pre-
sented the Past President George Easterling a certificate of Appreciation
for his hard work as Chapter President.
Beverly Nixon of Freeport was the speaker at the February meeting.
Mrs. Nixon is a member of the Brazoria County and Freeport Historical
Commission and she spoke on the Historical Insights from a Brazoria
County Historical Commission Member.
The March Chapter meeting speaker was Dr. John C Ray, the Dean of
Community and Information Services at Brazosport College. His topic
was The Two-Year College in Texas: a Democratic Institution. Two new
members to the Chapter were approved: Mathew Brain Piersall and John
Maxwell Salisbury. The Chapter noted that TXSSAR President Richard F
Arnold was scheduled to visit their chapter in April.
