14AA variety of TXSSAR
Compatriots attended the
Battle of Medina Anniver-
sary Ceremony this year,
including TXSSAR
President Elect, Tom Green
and the Baker family shown
in these photos.of Medina. This man was Peter Sides, and he is one of over 50
Patriots of the American Revolution who died and were bur-
ied in Texas. Direct descendants of Peter Sides were present
from around the country as were descendants of Benjamin
Allen, who also died in the battle, but is not believe to have
participated in the American Revolution.
Other interesting fact about this expedition is that the Re-
publican Army of the North won all the battles up to the Au-
gust 18, 1813 battle and had declared Texas free from Spain
~~ V
. k
WSW-and had written and signed the First Declaration of Indepen-
dence in Texas, before their defeat at the Battle of Medina.
Before coming to San Antonio, the Spanish Army surrounded
the Republican Army for four months at the La Bahia fort in
what is today Goliad. This is the longest siege in American
history, and is the reason they also fly the Emerald Green flag
at La Bahia. Much research is needed to learn about the more
than 3,000 men who were involved in this event. Everyone is
encouraged to study this all but forgotten battle in our his-
tory and learn more about these forgotten heroes who shaped
our history.
MINUTES OF THE TXSSAR BOARD OF
MANAGERS MEETING OF AUGUST 6-7, 2005
LONGVIEW, TEXAS
George T. West, TXSSAR Staff Secretary
The meeting was called to order by State Society President
Jim Heath. Rules of order were presented by Compatriot Tom
Lawrence in the absence of Chancellor Mark Hansen. Pledges
of allegiance to the US, Texas and SAR flags were led by
President Elect Tom Green. Invocation was given by Chaplain
Dr. Doug Harper.
President Heath's remarks included discussion of Chapter
health. In the near future, a new Chapter will be chartered in
Corpus Christi. Members of the Liberty Chapter have
requested that their Charter be revoked, primarily because
they are not obtaining new members and all current members
have rotated Chapter offices for many years. The Blaine
Wilhoit Chapter's charter is also expected to be revoked.
New Business
TXSSAR Treasurer Bob Faulkner's health has declined and
he has informed the President that he will be unable to fulfill
the duties of that position. Committee Chairman FSP W. Roy
Adams called the nominating committee, and as a result
Compatriot James T. Jones, Jr. was proposed to the Board of
Managers. As a result of an electronic poll of the Board of
Managers, Compatriot Jones was elected, and duly installed
at this meeting of the Board of Managers. Compatriot Don
Pugh conveyed greetings from Compatriot Bob Faulkner, who
was unable to attend this meeting.
In a similar situation, District 6 Vice President Tom Hill
revealed that his health was declining and that he would be
unable to perform his duties. Again, the nominating
committee led by FSP W. Roy Adams polled the Chapters in
District 6, who nominated Compatriot Tom Whitelock. At
this meeting, Compatriot Whitelock was unanimously elected,
and subsequently duly installed as Vice President District 6
for the unfulfilled term of Compatriot Hill.
Treasurer General Nathan White advised that he will
report at tomorrow's Board of Managers meeting on the 2006
National Congress, and that there will be a special meeting
tonight after the banquet. All members of the Board of
Managers are welcome and encouraged to attend.
The Board of Manager unanimously endorsed the
candidacy of Nathan White for President General and of Ed
Butler for Chancellor General.FALL 200
