To the Editors:
It has taken several days to sort out my feelings of hurt, anger,
and disbelief at the insensitivity of your editorial concerning the
possible use of quarantine in the AIDS health crisis.
The title of your statements, "The Public Comes First" has the
chilling implication that, if a person has the misfortunie to be afflicted
with a serious disease, they are somehow removed from "the public," a
group who presumably retains its civil rights and privileges because
it is healthy. I would hope that most of your readers have a more
cormassiornate point of view towards people whose body has been invaded
by a deadly virus.
Your assessment of the purpose of the gay rights movement is
absolutely incorrect. You suggest that it is our intention to protect
the right of gay people to engage in sexual activity. Tne purpose of
the gay rights movement is to protect people's jobs, their right to live
where they choose, their access to rights and privileges enjoyed by
other citizens - and, perhaps most important, the right of gay men
and women to live in peace and understanding with their families
and the rest of society. Your editorial does great disservice to those
goals and reveals a profound risunderstanding of this civil rights
movement .
Sincerely,
Bill Nelson
