JOHNSTON, JoE, A Study of the Needs of Second Grade Children
and an Evaluation of the Methods Used in Meeting These Needs in
One Second Grade Room of the 1-orace Mann School, Amarillo, Texas.
Master of Science (Elementary Education), August, 1939, 92 p., 16
tables, 11 illustrations, bibliography, 38 titles.
This thesis studies the dominant social, personality, and physical
needs of one second grade home-room of the Horace Mann School
of Amarillo, Texas, for the school year 1938-1939, and shows the
method used to meet these needs by the Amarillo school system and
its allied organizations.
The data were collected by direct observation, standardized tests,
- cumulative cards, anecdotal records, and the Amarillo Course of
t Study, supplemented by material collected from magazines, news-
f papers, periodicals, and professional books.
These needs were determined from the collected data, and the
methods used for their correction were those suggested by recognized
h authorities in the field of education, in so far as they were adaptable
e to local conditions. One chapter outlines a collection of authoritative
needs and the method for meeting each need. The succeeding chap-
d ters discuss the social, personality, and physical needs of the chil-
i. dren under observation together with the respective remedial methods
used for their correction. The author concludes that the Amarillo
e school system and its allied organizations provide an adequate pro-
gram for these needs, but that a measurable response to the social
d and personality programs is intangible and that definite results can
be obtained only after these programs are maintained over a long
period of time.
