Child Progress to Parents. Master of Science (Elementary Educa- P
tion), August, 1938, 93 p., 10 tables, 7 illustrations, bibliography,
32 titles.
This thesis is concerned with a philosophical analysis of ways S
of reporting child progress to parents. The major interest of the p
problem concerns an evaluation of reporting techniques in four groups
of progressive Texas schools. Informal letters to directors of instruc-
tion served as source for data.
Division of the five areas of the analysis produces this content: fc
(1) State of Problem; (2) Basis for Appraisal; (3) Survey of
Trends; (4) Comparison of Trends to Guiding Principles; and (5) n
Conclusions and Recommendations.
ar
The first area states that the problem deals with two major
items. It is concerned with discernings from modern philosophy and
psychology, the guiding principles of progressive education, and with PC
determining the extent to which the new trends of reporting child (F
progress compare with these guiding principles. Area two outlines 4 t
traditional philosophical principles and modern philosophical prin-
ciples. Area three gives the results of the current reporting prac- an
tices in Texas.. hu
The fourth area compares these trends with the guiding prin- gr,
ciples as set forth in the first area. Area five concludes that Texas gr(
schools are tending to emphasize traits instead of subjects as a Te
basis for reporting child progress, and that the trend in marking jud
symbols is toward progress checks as a means of evaluating chil- Thy
dren's growth. Conferences, informal letters, and progress sheets Thy
are recommended as reporting techniques for schools with a progres- dre
sive philosophy. lige

This study gives an exposition of five teaching methods which en l
were in progressive usage during the period from 1920 to 1940. The o
problem of the thesis is to determine the extent to which the methods liog.
courses taught in the North Texas State Teachers College Department
of Education parallel the methods which were in successively popular th
acceptance during the same period. The general exposition of the meth' e 1
ods was taken from the literature in the field, and the methods taught ers
in the Department of Education were analyzed from the adopted texts and
for the methods courses. Part
