includes less than twenty-four hours of English. If a student does not
present undergraduate credit for English 300 or the equivalent, he must
take one such undergraduate course in addition to the thirty hours of
basic requirements. A maximum of twenty-four semester hours may be
done in English.
A student who majors in English must complete a minimum of six
semester hours as a minor in a related field. If as much as twelve semes-
ter hours of minor work is done, it may be divided equally between two
foreign languages, history, philosophy, speech, and journalism, but other
fields may be chosen with the approval of the student's major professor
and the director of the department. Those who expect to continue grad-
uate study beyond the master's degree are advised to take English 500.
The Graduate Record Examination is required of applicants entering
the department. Undergraduate students anticipating entrance into grad-
uate work in English should take the examination in the final semester
of their senior year. In the event that the examination has not been taken
before the application is made, then the student should take it no later
than the next following administration.
