Roffman:a matter of fact, 1 'joined an ill-fated organization
that had the distinction of retreating farther
in the war than any one outfit advanced. Now I'll

When 1 had to fIy the next day , I Informed
my assistants that we had to get the airplane to
the hangar. We hald to change the cyl i nI der; we
had to change the prop. When we got back, ihe
airplane hadni' t got ten into the Iangar yet; however,
we had arrangements made for the next clay. We
were going to the hangar to get the airplane in
commission.
So your airplane was made operational. within the week?
Within the week, yes. lie had the term that our
plane was in the "red cross." The "red cross"
indicated that the airplane could not fly.
When did you finally .leave the island?
I left the island shortly after the Battle of Midway.
Where did you go?
I went to Townsville first, in Australia, and then
