Description

Early edition of Heidi by Johanna Spyri. The cover of the book is covered by a red dust jacket with a large illustration of Heidi and her grandfather. Heidi is standing in a field with flowers and grass. Next to her, sitting on a bench against a cabin, is her grandfather holding a smoking pipe. Next to Heidi is a bundle of red fabric tied together to hold belongings. Behind the cabin is an evergreen tree and in the distance are more trees and mountains reaching into the sky. A bookplate is attached to the interior cover. The bookplate marks the book as belonging to Gustine Courson Weaver. On the bookplate is an illustration of a room with a woman sitting in a chair looking out a set of open doors. Past the doors is a path leading to another building with a man walking down the path toward the room. Leafy vines are used to add a boarder to the edges of the book plate. On the inside cover is an illustration spanning the two pages. The illustration depicts a field with two cabins and few goats grazing in a grassy field. In the background are tall, dark evergreen trees. In the distance are mountains stretching into clouds in the sky. On the cover page is the title and names of the author, illustrator, and publishing company. Set behind the text is an illustration of Heidi on a mountain with her arms around two goats. In the background are more mountains with trees. On the opposite page is a note stating that the book was printed in the United States. On page 123 is a full page, black and white illustration of Heidi sitting on a stool at the table dining with her grandfather. On the table is a pair of bowls, a pitcher of milk, a plate, and a loaf of bread with a knife. Behind her grandfather is a window looking out to the mountains. Next to it is an unlit stone fireplace. The caption reads, "Our milk tastes nicer than anything else in the world, grandfather". On page 165 is a smaller black and white illustration of Heidi and a boy sitting in a sled going down a mountain in the snow. In the background are trees and more mountains.
