FROM THE EDITOR
Conclave XXIV is
approaching. Our Ann
Arbor hosts are preparing for
this event in the best tradi-
tion of Conclaves, to make it
a memorable gathering.
I think back to 1991,
when Mary, Tom and I
attended our very first
Conclave in Williamsburg.
We have been MBS mem-
bers for a few years by then
and it was more curiosity
than any other driving force
that took us to the Conclave.
It was a gorgeous October
weekend in a beautiful his-
toric southern city. But it
was more than the weather
and the location that capti-
vated us. Caroline McGehee
(now Lindemann) put
together an exciting event.
Her gracious hospitality and
the friendliness of some of
the participants, not speak-
ing of the abundance of
miniature books at the Book
Fair and the auction , made
us decide to attend next year.
And the next. And every
year after that. Ann Arbor
will be our 16-th Conclave
in a row.
In the 1990's, when MBS
had more members,
Conclave attendance regu-
larly exceeded 100. In the
last few years it didn't. Let'shope that in Ann Arbor we'll
again attain that magic
number.
Those of you who are
more or less regular
Conclave attendees, will not
need persuasion to come if
you can. New members or
those who have never been
at a Conclave, please give it
a try, as we did fifteen years
ago. You will get a new per-
spective of MBS and may not
want to miss another
Conclave. There will be a
report from Ann Arbor in the
next Newsletter, as well as
from New York where Neale
Albert's designer binding
collection will be on display
at the Grolier Club.
Finally, on another note,
let me express my delight
that Joan Boring will follow
me as editor of the
Newsletter in 2007. A well-
liked, committed member of
MBS, she deserves every-
body's gratitude for the
superb work she did for
many years as compiler of
the annual auction cata-
logues; a huge job! The
Newsletter will be in good
hands when Joan takes over!
