Subj: Spam-Heir Symbolism; thanks to Charles

Apologies for chiming in belatedly, but I've been out
of town for eight days. Though I mostly dislike politics-as-
symbolism, I still think the Hormel fracas should interest many who
have no stake in this one man's career, even as the issue of the
color line in sports riveted the attention of many who cared nothing
for baseball. In innumerable internal debates about whether it is
acceptable for an openly gay candidate to fill a position of trust or
contact with the public, it would strengthen the one side's hand to be
able to say, "For Pete's sake, the country has gay ambassadors, and
you don't think we can afford a gay plant manager/comptroller/
contract negotiator?" Now if only Mr. Hormel were as well suited
for this historical role as Jackie Robinson.
Treating of the period when Arianism was on its way to complete
suppression and extinction, Gibbon writes (ch. 27), "The anathemas of
the church were fortified by a sort of civil excommunication, which
separated them from their fellow-citizens by a peculiar brand of infamy...
The sectaries were gradually disqualified for the possession of
honourable or lucrative employments..." And note, for those of you
who would dismiss this issue as of moment only to those angling for
high-powered jobs themselves: "this declaration of the supreme
magistrate tended to justify, or at least to excuse, the insults of a
fan tic populace."
On another matter, I happened to be glancing through a recent
copy of Human Events at a public library while on my travels and found
a direct personal attack on one of ours. The right-wing paper
disapprovingly cited Gov. George Bush's comments on the Log Cabin
controversy and said insiders attributed the govemor's stance to the
influence of Ch rates Francis, a "homosexual activist" who was a
member of the governor's finance committee. I think Charles deserves
all of our thanks, not least for being willing to take this kind of heat
in print - W.O.
