Purpose of the Study
The purpose of this study was to determine if selected
cemeteries in Southern Montague County were maintained in the
tradition of Upland Southern burial customs.
Limitations'of the Study
This study was limited to the cemeteries in the southern-
most part of Montague County. The city cemetery in Bowie was
not included, nor were the community cemeteries of McDonald, Salona,
Hopewell, Carter, Mallard, and Lake Valley.
The eighteen cemeteries included in the study were Sunset,
Antioch, Smyrna, Hardy, Pleasant Hill, New Hart, Dye, Perryman,
Scrougy,.Jackson, Denver, Briar Creek, Prairie Branch, Mitchell,
Brushy, St. Peters, Lindale, and one unnamed cemetary located-one
mile north of Mitchell.
Previous Studies
A study by Donald G. Jeane (1) revealed several factors
concerning cemetery maintenance and burial customs of the settlers
from the Upland Southern region of the United States. The Upland
Southern burial customs are listed as follows: uninscribed
markers, petrified wood, fresh water shells, cedar trees, gardenia
plants, iris plants, crepe myrtle, rounded head stones, scraped
grave mounds, brick lined plots, and toys and decorations on the
graves. Jeane also stated that the Upland Southern cemetery
was located on high ground, laid out in an east-west axis, and
were in an isolated location. Wrought iron fences surrounded
the grave plots and some graves were even covered with sheds or
vaults. Rounded head stones, homemade head stones, metal plates,2
