AIDS, PENTAMIDINE AND LYPHOMED
Under the Orphan Drug Act of 1983, Lyphomed was designated
the exclusive manufacturer and marketer of injectable pentamidine
isethioniate, a broad spectrum antibiotic that is used most
commonly for the treatment of Pneumocystis Carinii pneumonia
(PCP.)
PCP is the most common opportunistic infection associated
with AIDS. It is the leading cause of AIDS-related deaths and
occurs in 60% of all AIDS patients. Produced and sold under the
trade name Pentam 300 (R), pentamidine is approved for the
treatment of acute episodes of PCP through IV (intravenous) or IM
(intramuscular) use only.
In 1983, AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) was a
little-known disease in the United States. In fact, its
identification came about when officials of The Centers for
Disease Control (CDC) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human
Services noticed a surge in doctor requests for the drug
pentamidine (which then was only available through the CDC).(over)
