With the election of these board members, THRF's board now stands at a total
of 15 individuals. This representation breaks down at 8 men and 7 women, with 7
trustees located in Austin, 3 in Houston, 3 in Dallas and 2 in San Antonio. There are
currently a few unfilled seats on THRF's board, and the foundation is looking for
individuals from other areas of the state, particularly West Texas and the Rio Grande
Valley, to serve on the board. Persons interested should contact board member Sue
Lovell, chair of the nominations committee, in care of the THRF office.
In other business at its spring meeting, THRF's board committed the foundation
to continuing its highly successful AIDS Legal Resource Project for a third year, with
the decision made to seek IOLTA funding again from the Texas Equal Access to
Justice Foundation established by order of the Texas Supreme Court. During the 12-
month period ending March 31, 1990, THRF's AIDS Legal Resource Project served a
total of 528 clients. The project is a statewide counseling and referral service for
persons who have AIDS-related legal problems. Margaret Tucker continues to serve
as the project coordinator. Persons who have AIDS-related legal problems may
contact Tucker by calling 1-800-828-6417; residents of Austin may call 479-8473.
The THRF board also voted to make a financial contribution to sponsor the third
annual Texas Lesbian Conference to be held on May 18th - 20th in San Antonio. This
marks THRF's third year to be a financial sponsor of the Texas Lesbian Conference.
Last year, at the conference in Houston, THRF also provided panelists who put on the
legal issues workshop.
In the national arena, the THRF board voted to become a sponsor of the second
Lavender Law Conference to be held in Atlanta on October 6th - 8th. THRF was a
financial sponsor of the first Lavender Law Conference in San Francisco in November
of 1988, out of which grew the National Lesbian and Gay Law Association (NLGLA).
NLGLA is the national professional bar association for gay and lesbian lawyers, legal
professionals and law students. THRF board member David Bryan will present a
workshop on the court challenge to the Texas sodomy statute in the 21.06 case at the
Lavender Law Conference in Atlanta. THRF and Bryan have also committed to
helping NLGLA publicize the 1990 conference through THRF's extensive network of
75 cooperating attorneys in Texas.
In other activity relating to the 21.06 challenge, lead 21.06 plaintiff Linda
Morales of Houston has been invited to be a guest speaker at the upcoming banquet
to be held on June 16th as part of the Houston Lesbian and Gay Pride Week '90
activities.
The next THRF board meeting is set for July 21st - 22nd in Austin, to be a
planning retreat for the board with a social event scheduled on the evening of July
