NGLTF TOWN MEETING TO EXAMINE
IMPACT OF AIDS ON GAY/LESBIAN POLITICS
WASHINGTON DC--Panelists and the audience will discuss the
impact of the AIDS epidemic on the gay and lesbian political
movement at a town meeting organized by the National Gay and
Lesbian Task Force on Friday, October 6, 1989, 7:30 PM in Ross
Hall Room 101, George Washington University, 2300 I Street NW,
Washington DC.
Entitled "AIDS and Politics: Transformations of Our Movement,"
the town meeting will feature activists whose political work on
behalf of gay and lesbian liberation pre-dates the AIDS epidemic.
"We want to reflect on how gay and lesbian activism has changed
since AIDS," said Sue Hyde, NGLTF staffmember and program
organizer. "In the day-to-day crush of the crisis we spend
precious little time thinking about now and why our movement has
been shaped and transformed by an accompanying epidemic of
homophobia, racism, sexism and neglect."
Speaking at the "AIDS and Politics" town meeting will be:
* Jeff Levi--Washington lobbyist for Gay Men's Health Crisis;
former executive director and AIDS lobbyist at NGLTF
* Veneita Porter--director, New York State Office of AIDS
Discrimination Issues; former director, Rhode Island AIDS
Project; writer and contributor to Gay Community News and Bad
Attitude
* Charles Stewart--Chief Deputy to California State Senator
Diane Watson (D-Chair of Health and Human Services Committee,
Chair of California Black Legislative Caucus); former co-chair
National Black and White Men Together; former member Board of
Directors, National Coalition of Black Lesbians and Gays
* Scott Tucker--Philadelphia ACT UP; National Writers' Union
* Maxine Wolf--New York ACT UP, Majority Action Caucus.
The "AIDS and Politics" town meeting will kick off a weekend in
Washington which includes the final full display of the NAMES
Project AIDS Memorial Quilt, a national march on Washington to
demand Housing NOW!, and a Saturday evening candlelight vigil
from the Quilt to the Lincoln Memorial.A $3 donation will be requested at the door.
