"Other Gay travel guides have been plagued by a lack of good, up-to-date information
and have usually focused too narrowly on nightlife," Nicholson says. "Detour's guides
meld both Gay-specific destinations with comprehensive information about main
attractions in a single guide. We want to be the one travel guide Gay and Lesbian travelers
choose to take along."
GLORIA ESTEFAN, D.C.'S MAYOR AND QUENTIN CRISP
The guides are already attracting keen interest from several celebrities, Gloria Estefan has
written the introduction for Detour's Miami and Washington, D.C. Mayor Sharon Pratt
Kelly has lent her public support to that city's Detour guide. Noted personality Quentin
Crisp has written the introduction for the New York book.
Importantly, the guides are reflective of the thriving businesses that have emerged from
the Gay-rights movement of the '90's. Publishing, in particular, has been the most visible
and successful industry to cater to the high disposable income of many Gays and Lesbians.
A handful of national gay magazines have emerged including the lifestyle publications Out,
Genre, 10 Percent and Victory!, which caters to Gay entrepreneurs.
Other guides planned for 1994 and their expected dates of publication are:
Detour's Amsterdam June 1
Detour's Paris July 1
Detour's Southern Calif. September 15th
Detour's Caribbean November 15th
Detour's San Francisco December 15th
