The Microbibliophile to Publish Book
Twentieth Century U. S. Miniature Books, by Robert C. Bradbury will be
published later this year by The Microbibliophile. This book will include
bibliographic listings of about 3,000 miniature books as well as narrative
descriptions of more than 250 publishers. For each publisher there will be
a narrative section as well as a chronological list of miniature books
published. The focus will be on private press miniature books. Bradbury
says, "This century of U. S. miniature books started off with a bang with
the publication of the Charles Hardy Meigs edition of the Rubaiyat of
Omar Khayyam in Cleveland in 1900. The century is concluding with a
large number of publishers issuing a wide variety of fine examples of
miniature book arts."
Much of the information in Bradbury's book will be published for the first
time. "I am excited by the challenge of documenting the wee tomes
produced by so many publishers, each exhibiting their own creativity and
even personality. Consider these two examples. There are the 500 plus
dollhouse scale artistic wonders of Barbara J. Raheb. Then there are the
two letterpress printed miniature books published by a Chicago printer,
each book written about a love of his life and issued in an edition of one!"
Bradbury's article on The Proof Press in this issue is from his book. The
Microbibliophile will publish other examples in future issues.
As he finishes his manuscript over the next few months, Bradbury would
appreciate hearing from you, especially about rare miniature books
published in the U.S. in the early 1900s and about relatively unknown
publishers including those just starting out. His address is: 879 Pleasant
Street, Worcester, MA 01602.
"The Microbibliophile" is published six times a year, in March, May, July,
September, November and January. A full-color photograph is mounted on
the cover of each issue. Domestic subscription $29.00/year, Canada
$30.00/year, Overseas $39.00/year. Payment in U.S. funds, please.
