MINIATURE BOOK NEWS
Number 22 16 Dromara Rd., St. Louis, Mo. 63124 December 1970
FISHER AND BRO.
The publishing firm of Fisher and Brothers
of Philadelphia published a series of
children's books of various miniature sizes.
Little apparently has been written on their
smallest format series, printed in 1834 and
1865. No mention can be found in Henderson's
Newsletters, Adomeit's Miniature
Book Collector, Speilmann, or Osbourne.
We have found six different titles in this
series to date, and we would be curious to
hear of others from our readers and subscribing
libraries.
Each book in this group measures 214 by
2 inches, and seems to have all been bound
in reddish or blue cloth boards, with blind
stamped design and title on the front covers,
and a head of a child embossed on the back
cover. All are 192 pages, with appropriate
engraved plates and frontispiece.
THE CHILD'S BIBLE. With Plates. By
a Lady of Cincinnati, seems to have been
the most common issue, and was the first
in this series, bearing the date 1834 on the
title verso. Fisher and Bro. must have been
a large firm, because four cities (PhiladelC il~t<4 i ,Jd p i rv ,,,t!. . .

listed on the title page of this title.
The purpose of this tiny Bible was
stated in the preface, and a tone of moralistic
zeal shows through:
"The Bible is the best book in the
world, but there are a great many people
who never saw one. Some who have seen
it are so wicked or so ignorant that they
do not like that (sic) children, or even
older persons should have it. Few such
live in this country--almost every family
here has a Bible...
We have made this small book, dear
children on purpose for you. As we knew
you liked pictures, we have given you a
number. After you have read this through,
you will wish to know more about the
Bible. Your mamma will get you one, or
let you take hers, and you will learn
much more than we had room to tell you."
Lovely etchings of Noah and The Ark,
Lot Fleeing from Sodom, Pharoah overwhelmed,
Daniel in the Lion's Den, Obadiah
and Prophets, etc. intersperse the text.
Over thirty years elapsed between this
Child's Bible of 1834 and the others in thisTitle page and frontispiece from one of the Fisher & Brothers publications.
