It's not unusual to see a judge wearing a robe. But
it's not everyday that the defendant wears one. And
Father J. Von Brown's robe is not the somber black,
preferred by men on the bench. It's various shades
of blue....with bold checks. For his accessories,
Von Brown chose white slippers, of a simple, un-
cluttered design. Normally, Von Brown wears a suit
to court, but he did( t know ..at he was going to
appear today until two sheriff's deputies arrived at
his bedside at International Hospital, on South Cen-
tral Expressway, and brought him to the Dallas County
Criminal Court of Judge Shelby Cox. Actually, the
defendant had a hint of what was to come, when Doctor
J.W. Pikard, county health officer, arrived at the
hospital, ahead of the deputies. He took a look at
Von Brown and reported back to Judge Cox that the
defendant was well enough to come to court. Von Brown,
who heads a negro church, was convicted of possession
of barbiturates in Judge Cox'-s court last month,
sentenced
to two years in jail, and fined three(j
