Reuther's exact arrival time and the nature of his
speech to union members was kept secret. Labor
spokesmen said Reuther has had many threats on his
life and travels under strict security. Newsmen are
barred from the meeting. U-A-W contracts with the
automobile industry come up for renewal next spring
and already there are rumors that union demands
will bring a strike. The General Motors plant at
Arlington today laid off an unannounced number of
workers in what the company called a cutback in
production. Lay offs also are underway at otherG-M plants.
