TAKE TAPE IMMEDIATELY AFTER TETLE
At 3:23 p.m. yesterday afternoon, a tornado dipped
out of a spring thunderstorm, and struck at the heart
6f Greenwood, Arkansas, a hamlet 18 miles mouth ofFort Smith.
The tornado destroyed the village's
business district, and ctt a path of death and
destruction a half-mile-long and 400 feet wide thmigh
the city's residential area. At least 13 people
died in the twister, and 270 others were injured.

The stavm was on Greenwood before the bureau
was able to braodcast a warning. A meterologist said
"It formed and struck within a matter of minutes...we
didn't even have time to start the teletype to getout the warning.
Today, Greenwood did the only
thing it could---it began digging outfrom under the
destruction. Official wheels have been set in
motion to declare the pre-civil war town a disaster
area, thereby providing federal funds for its07
