THE NORTH TEXAS DAILY—PAGE 7
The Envelope,
If You Please
By BRYAN REED, Sports Editor
OK, guys move in a little closer here. That’s it. Can everybody hear?
Good.
It’s time for the second annual (well, it would be the second if we’d
done this last year) Football ..........(pick one: Player, Coach,
Writer, Broadcaster) Most Likely To . . . awards.
Please, hold the applause until we’re finished. And don’t throw
anything at us.
Our first award goes to the head maji around here. Let’s see, we had
his name here somewhere . . . oh, here it is:
FOOTBALL COACH Most Likely To Either Buy a Smaller Belt or
Rent a U-Haul Trailer: Hayden Fry, who said he was too busy to eat
anything the week before NT played UT-Austin. “What are you going
* t0 d° y°u ever 8et *nto the Southwest Conler-
ence?” somebody asked him. “Go someplace
else,” he said.
Football Player Most Likely To Ask for a
V Bigger Uniform Next Year; Guard James Perry,
a 5-11, ?.41-pounder from Dallas. At one post-
game meal, Perry grabbed three rolls almost as
soon as they were put on the table and started
slapping butter on them. “1 thought you were
on a diet,” another lineman said, to which Perry
replied, “I am.”
Football Writer Most Likely To Turn in
Greasy Copy, or at Least Try To: Phil Rogers
of the Lewisville News-Advertiser, who griped when he didn’t get to
sit in the Texas Stadium press box at one NT game this year. Upset
because he wouldn’t get all those fascinating statistical tidbits? Nope.
"1 wanted some of that barbecue they feed you up there,” Rogers said.
Washington
Football Broadcaster Most Likely To Have His Insurance Cancel-
led: Bill Mercer, who drives like he had to be 40 miles from wherever
he is 30 minutes ago. “This is a rent car,” Mercer says on road trips.
“They expect you to tear it up.”
Football Player Most Likely Not To Be Pope John Paul Il's Succes-
sor: Linebacker Burks Washington. We can’t tell you what he said.
Football Coach Most Likely To Scare a Bus, Airplane, or What-
ever Else He Happens To See: Offensive line Coach Clovis Hale, who
could stare down a statue.
Football Writer Most Likely To Ask Your Opinion of the Previous
Play: Tom Koch of the Times Herald, who always manages to ask,
“Who scored that touchdown? Does anybody
know what just happened?”
Football Broadcaster Most Likely To Get Lost:
KNTU’s Don Miller, who claims to know his
way around Shreveport. Don't believe him. He
spent an hour looking for the strip and finally
found it—a block away from his hotel. “I knew
it was around here somewhere,” he said.
Football Player Most Likely Not To Be Drafted
as a Wide Receiver, but Who Might Make All-
Pro Sieve: Defensive tackle Reginald Lewis, who
dropped an interception in the end zone against
Louisiana Tech. “If it’d been food or a woman
he said.
Lewis
I’d have caught it,’
AND, FINALLY: Football Writer (sort of) Most Likely To Stand in
Front of the TV Set: NT Sports Information Director Fred Graham,
who saw Alabama's Bear Bryant being escorted off the field by two
Alabama state troopers. “Don’t let Hayden (who has one Denton
County sheriffs deputy for a bodyguard) see that” Graham said.
“He’ll want another one.”
Now you can clap.

Rounding the
Curve
Julie Bergeron, Debra Pinnix
and Doris Boettighelmer
compete in the 130-yard
curve event in Wednesday’s
intrasquad track meet at
Fouts Field. Ms. Bergeron
won the event, and her green
teammates defeated its
white counterparts by a 92-
81 margin. The meet held
events for men and women,
and the point totals from
each event were combined
to determine the winner.

Season Ends for Soccer Team
Coach Sanchez Reflects on Games, Play, Next Season
By BOBBY BASSETT
Daily Reporter
The Mean Green soccer team
received no invitation for NCAA post-
season play. Soccer Coach Simon
Sanchez reflected on the past season and
the long wait until next year
“I was very excited at the first of the
season,” Sanchez, said. “1 felt we had the
team that could get us into the play-offs.
But it’s such a political thing, if your
school has a representative on the selec-
tion committee it’s much easier to be
selected. You can’t vote for your own
team, but you can certainly lobby for
it."
Although the Mean Green finished
with a good 11-3-5 record, they limped
through much of the season with in-
juries. The team lacked depth, and as a
result, tied a couple of games they
should have won.
Sanchez skipped the final game of the
season, a 2-2 misfire against TCU, to
scout players in the Austin area. He said
he was happy with what he saw. “I saw
three players I liked. They were young
but quite skillful. In terms of experience,
we might be better off the year after next
rather than next year.”
Sanchez said the best the Green
played this year was against SMU. In
that game the two teams played dead
even in the first half, but SMU scored on
a penalty kick in the second half and
eventually won, 1-0.
“Claudio Turati came out with a in-

jury at halftime, Sanchez said. “I
changed my strategy and it cost us the
game. It was the turning point in our
season, but we learned."
North Texas and SMU are the two
soccer powers in the Southwest, and a
victory over the Pomes would have been
a sweet one. But after Turati was
sidelined momentum sifted in SMU’s
favor, Eventually, a NT miscue resulted
in the free kick that won for the Ponies.
Balie Reid pulled up lame a few games
later. Fernando Paulsen was slowed
much of the year with a hamstring pull,
and John Welsch also played hurt.
Sanchez said goalie Greg Stinson was
a bright spot for him the entire year. “I
think Stinson missed only one goal, that
I thought he should have stopped, the
whole year.” Sanchez, said. "He’s a very
strong player."
Sanchez is of the opinion that in order
to be recognized by the NCAA people,
you have to play a tough schedule.
