Reagan makes nomination
for new joint chiefs chairman
SANTA MONICA, Calif. (AP) —
President Ronald Reagan an-
nounced Thursday he is nominating
Army Gen. John W. Vessey to suc-
ceed Air Force Gen. David Jones as
chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff
when Jones’ term expires June 30.
Speaking to reporters as he
boarded his helicopter at Santa
Monica Airport to fly to his southern
California ranch for a few days of
relaxation, Reagan called Vessey a
soldier's soldier. Vessey will be
promoted from his present position
as Army vice chief of staff.
Vessey was an enlisted man who
won a battlefield commission during
the battle of Anzio Beach in Italy.
Senator proclaims innocence,

WASHINGTON (AP) —Sen.
Harrison Williams, D-N.J.,
vehemently declared his innocence
despite his conviction on conspiracy
and bribery charges stemming from
the FBI’s Abscam undercover in-
vestigation.
Williams took the Senate floor
Thursday to proclaim his innocence
of any crimes or impropriety and
vowed to fight this preposterous
recommendation I be expelled.

Contradictions bring mistrial
in inmate's murder trial
GALVESTON (AP)—Contradic-
tions between physical evidence and
testimony led jurors to a I0-2
deadlock Thursday, forcing a state
district court judge to declare a
mistrial for Texas Department of
Corrections inmate Eroy Edward
Brown
“Inconsistency. We had to go with
what was consistent with the scene,”
said juror Al Chandler, 47, of
LaMarque. He said the majority of
the jury favored acquitting Brown,
who was charged with capital murder
in the drowning of Wallace Pack, the
warden of Ellis Unit, on April 4,
1981.
Chandler said jurors disregarded
the last two weeks of testimony, in
which defense attorneys called in-
mates and former inmates to the
stand.
Nuclear commission orders
study of Diablo Canyon plant
WASHINGTON (AP) —The
Nuclear Regulatory Commision
Thursday ordered a new, indepen-
dent study of problems at Diablo
Canyon nuclear power plant near
San Luis Obispo, Calif., after a top
NRC official said large numbers of
errors are being found at the plant.
“Hundreds of modifications” may
be needed before the plant can be
operated, the commision was told by
Harold Denton, NRC director of
reactor regulation.
Denton said a large number of
design errors are being found by the
review that the NRC ordered last
year, after the NRC suspended a test
license it had issued for the plant on
the Pacific Coast, 200 miles
northwest of Los Angeles.
Haig says Guatemalan threat
may affect Mexican security
LOS A N G E L. E S ( A P ) —
Secretary of State Alexander Haig
says Guatemala is on the verge of a
crisis similar to that in El Salvador,
one that could pose a very fundamen-
tal threat to the security of Mexico.
It is only a matter of weeks or
months before Guatemala enters a
crisis that poses even great potential
for damaging U.S. interests than the
internal problems in El Salvador,
Haig said in an interview published
Thursday by The Los Angeles Times.
"It’s not a question of one black
chip (domino) knocking over
another," Haig told The Times .

Pikes vow 'hot' time at chili cookoff
By PAMELA USSERY
Daily Reporter
Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity hosts its
third annual Pike Chili Cookoff from
noon to midnight Saturday at the
Denton County Fairgrounds.
"Expect to see the best cooking and
craziest people you’ve ever seen. All the
chili and barbecue you can handle will
be there,” Billy Cope, Valley View
senior, said Monday.
Judging will begin at 3 p.m , but Cope
said people who have never been to a
chili cookoff should come about noon.
“You look at the people cooking and
try to decide whether to taste it or not,”
Cope said.
Besides winning trophies, contestants
have a chance to win a showmanship
award, Cope said
“The same group has won for two
years. The first year they won under the
name “Two-Wheel Gang” by riding
around on their motorcyles. The second
year they won with “Hogs Breath
C hili,” taking a three-wheel motorcycle
and putting a bed on the back of it, then
taking a real hog’s head and roping it to
the front of the motorcycle and then put-
ting another one on their table," ( ope
said.
Tickets for all day are $5 in advance
and $6 at the gate. The price includes
chili, barbecue, beer and games and the
performance of a band, "Five Easy
Pieces," (Ope said.
Tickets are SI for those who want to
attend the cookoff only, he said.
This is the first year for the Pikes Chili
Cookoff to be sanctioned by the
Lerlingua, Texas, Cookoff, Cope said
I his means that the chili cookers,
relered to as “chili heads,” and must
cook by lerlingua rules, which means
cooking everything on the spot, Cope
said.
Chili will be judged on color, smell
and taste, he said. A cup from each
entrants chili will be judged, in which
“seasoning can be used, but may not be
seen," Cope said. Also, no beans can be
visible in the chili, Cope said. "Most
people grind the seasonings and
anything else that isn’t meat or a brown
color,” ('ope said.
The top ten chili cookers will receive
trophies The first place winner will be
sent to the lerlingua Cookoff this sum-
mer, and the second and third place win-
ners will receive points toward the
lerlingua Cookoff, Cope said.
The fraternity expects between t <X)0
and 1,500 people to attend, ( Ope said

Contest tries to home in on words
By CAROL RUST
Staff Writer
An essay is worth 1,915 square feet of
house — or it will be to one person with
persuasive writing ability.
Pat Vandiver of Kerrville is willing to
trade his S75.000 Arlington home for a
convincing 100-word essay and a $50
entry fee.
After a futile 18 months of trying to
sell the house, Vandiver commenced the
essay contest, the winner of which will
receive the four-bedroom home.
But Vandiver said he must get 1,500
entries — each w ith a $50 entry fee — to
cover the appraised value of the house,
contest advertising and time he lost from
work, while attempting to drum up in-
terest in the contest — a total of
$75,000.
Although the contest is two weeks un-
derway, Vandiver has received less than
200 essays. “I thought I would have had
from 800 to 900 entries really quick, and
then it would taper off, hut it hasn’t
worked that way," he said. "It’s going to
work, but it’s going to be close.

I’m maintaining two houses and piling
up interests. You can’t go on like that
for too long,” the 43-year-old builder
said.
Hundreds of cars have driven by the
house since he announced the contest.
Some of the drivers stop and walk up to
the house to get a entry blank from a
cardboard box on the front porch, he
said.
Vandiver has advertised the contest
through radio, television and news-
papers. "I have the names and address-
es of every daily newspaper in Texas,
and l plan to contact all of them.” He
said he has been interviewed on radio
stations in Baltimore, Md., Atlanta,

stories on the contest.
Vandiver said he got the idea from a
similar contest conducted by a San An-
tonio psychologist who wanted to sell
her house. "I didn’t jump on it like a hen

Antonio newspaper and studied it for
