In last week's newspaper, the back-
to-school listing of supplies did not
include an important item that every
student should have. Regardless of
age or grade, each student needs a
LIBRARY CARD! This fact is made
quite clear every time a teacher as-
signs a project to their classes. Par-
ents, send or bring your children to
the Depot Public Library for their
Library card. This is one service that
is entirely cost-free but of unlimited
value.
If your child is computer knowl-
edgeable, then you need to also sign
him up for that resource. The com-
puters at the Library are satellite sta-
tions of the school system and have
the same data available. Since the
Library is open on Thursdays from 4
p.m. to 9 p.m., and on Saturdays from
10 a.m. to 3 p.m., this increases your
student's possible study hours. Round
out your child's school supplies with
a membership card at the Depot Li-
brary.
Two ladies from the Texas State
Library and Archives Division vis-
ited the Library last Thursday.
Kathleen Walls, the Grants Coordi-
nator, and Jeanette Larson, Director
of the Library Development Divi-
sion, spent the morning with Helen
Wright, local Grants Coordinator,
Linda Wells, Depot Library Board
member and Librarian at THS, and
Ruth Allen, Depot Librarian.
Much ground was covered and
local staff members gained much
valuable information. The Slate Li-
brary staff is very helpful and always
willing to answer our questions. As
stated here before, these people are
hard working and underpaid. Both
Kathleen and Jeanette were very
pleased with the progress that has
been made at the Depot. It has never
looked more handsome!
Last Sunday's top ten best seller
book listing contained titles of sev-
eral books we already have on our
shelves. We continue to add to our
collection and use the critic's remarks
as a guide to selecting quality litera-
ture for our public. We always wel-
come your suggestions, as YOU are
our reason for existing.

Dear Editor:
For the last 3 months my mother
was in and out of the Throckmorton
Hospital.
Sometimes we came in the middle
of the night, sometimes in the day
time. It never mattered what time we
were always welcome.
11 makes me feel very proud of our
doctor's, (entire) ambulance crew,
hospital staff, home health, sheriff &
deputy and everyone who helped.
The hospital doesn't have the most
modem facilities to work with, butall
the extra care and attention was won-
derful.
They gave her beautiful birthday
flowers & lots of hugs and kisses.
After she passed away they all
came into her room to pay their re-
spects. I could never thank them
enough for their kindness. You may
never have to use this hospital, but if
you ever do. You will be treated the
same as we were.

Fort Belknap Electric
receives Chesnutt award
Fort Belknap Electric Coopera-
tive (FBE C),IIome Team Advantage
public education campaign received
the 1999 Edgar F. Chesnutt Award
from the National Rural Electric Co-
operative Association's (NRECA)
Council of Rural Electric Communi-
cators at its July 12 conference in
Minneapolis. The Chesnutt Award is
presented for excellence in commu-
nications for the best total communi-
cation program submitted from the
electric cooperatives across the coun-
try.
The Home Team Advantage, a
public information effort to educate
co-op members about FBEC's reli-
able, affordable service and commit-
ment to community, was part of the
first large-scale advertising campaign
undertaken in the 60-year history of
the electric cooperatives of Texas.
The co-op was involved in every stage
of the campaign, from arranging
photo shoots of employees and mem-
bers to distributing the print and ra-
dio ads to local media.
A customized portfolio of print
ads, photographic images, radio spots
and a speaker's kit was created for
FBEC and each of the other 42 par-
ticipating Texas cooperatives. Each
speaker's kit included two speeches,
one nine minute video and 100 bro-
w
chures to use in educational presenta-
tions within the co-op's 6-county ser-
vice territory.
"I think the campaign emerged
naturally, right out of the essence of
the co-op idea - local pride, commu-
nity spirit, a sense of place," said
Mark Stubbs, General Manager/CEO
of FBEC.
FBEC's Home Team Advantage
campaign was coordinated with
NRECA's Touchtone Energy® na-
tional branding effort, but maintained
a distinct Texas character. For ex-
ample, FBEC members and employ-
ees, instead of professional models,
are featured in print ads used in local-
newspapers, billboards and other
media where they are readily recog-
nized by community members.
The Chesnutt Award is named for
Edgar F. Chesnutt, manager of coop-
erative communications with Arkan-
sas Electric Cooperatives from 1961
until his death in 1987. During that
time he wrote a handbook on public
relations, "Getting in Step," that co-
ops still use today.
