Old Jail Art Center
to exhibit Donald Vogel
The Old Jail Art Center is pleased
to announce its upcoming exhibition
entitled "Donald S. Vogel: Retro-
spective 1936-1997" to take place 07
August through 26 September. The
exhibition is organized by Valley
House Gallery in Dallas, TX, builtby
Vogel in 1953 as his home, studio
and exhibition space. The old Jail Art
Center is the 1st venue for this exhibi-
tion of oil paintings which has trav-
eled to the Tyler Museum of Art and
the Amarillo Museum of Art in the
past four months.
Donald Stanley Vogel was bom in
Milwaukee, Wisconsin 20 October
1917. He began his formal art train-
in San Antonio when he was seven-
teen under the tuition of Eleanor
Onderdonk. After graduation, he
moved to Chicago in 1936 to enroll in
the School of the Art Institute of
Chicago. It was there that Vogel first
encountered the works of the Impres-
sionists and Post-Impressionists.
Their study of light and ability to
capture fleeting moments of time in-
stilled in Vogel an excitement and
hope, which he found refreshing com-
pared to his surrounding world dur-
ing the Great Depression. Vogel
would incorporate the sense of joy he
felt from the Impressionists into his
own work, and even further into his

Dr. Terry Beals, Texas' state vet-
erinarian, is advising owners to have
equine vaccinated against
encephalomyelitis, or "sleeping sick-
ness," a mosquito-transmitted disease
that can cause serious illness or death
among affected horses, donkeys,
mules or ponies. Eastern Equine
Encephalomyelitis (EEE) has been
diagnosed in several horses and emus
in Eastand Southeast Texas and Loui-
siana. The disease should not be con-
fused with Equine Infectious Ane-
mia (EIA), an equine virus for which
there is no vaccine or cure.
"A vaccine is readily available to
protect against both the Eastern and
Western forms of encephalomyelitis.
The vaccine is administered by pri-
vate practicing veterinarians and re-
quires two injections, 30 days apart.
A booster shot is then needed annu-
ally or biannually," said Dr. Beals,
who heads the Texas Animal Health
Commission, the state's livestock
health regulatory agency. He said
some veterinarians also employ the
encephalomyelitis vaccine in an off-
label use to protect ratites (emus,
rheas, and ostriches) against the dis-
ease.
Dr. Beals encouraged owners to
have equine vaccinated with a three-
way or "trivalent" vaccine that also
protects against the Venezuelan form
of encephalomyelitis, if the animals
travel or reside south of Highway 90,
which crosses from Del Rio, east
through San Antonio, Houston and
Beaumont. "Venezuelan Equine
Encephalomyelitis (VEE) has not
been diagnosed in the U.S. since the
1970's, but cases in Mexico have
been reported occasionally, and
equine near the border should have
the added protection, unless they're
to be shipped international ly," he said.
