names Perez, Garcia
students of the month
The Benavides High School
Lagle Chronicle has announced
the December Senior-of-the-
month. They are Elda Perez and
Richard Louis Garcia.
Elda is the daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Maximo 1. Perez, Sr.
from Ramirez. She is active in the
Future Farmers of America, Fu-
ture Homemakers of America,
Eagle Chronicle, Upward Bound
Program at Texas A&I Univer-
sity, and cross country.
Her hobbies include helping
people, going to dances, talking
to people, and meeting new
people. Elda plans to attend co-
lege at Texas A&I University and
major in psychology.
Richard is the son of Mr. and
Mrs. Luis A. Garcia of Benav-
ides. He is active in the Future
Fanners of America, tennis, stage
band, annual staff, Benavides
EMS, U. L L. Debate and head-
line writing.
• His- hobbies include photog-
raphy, outdoors music, carpen-
try, tennis, playing pool, swim-
ming, and being with friends.
Richard plans to attend college at
UT in Austin and major in medi-
cine.

University. Others inducted were Marinka Bozada from
Hebbronville and Andrea Centurion from Kingsville. A banquet
was held after the ceremony.

A&I University chapter of Pi
Sigma Alpha, the national politi-
cal science honor sodety, recently
inducted new members and pre-
sented several scholarships.
New members include: Jorge
Benavides of Hebbronville; Car-
los Blanton of Freer, Eloy Cuevas
of Kingsville; Lisa Morales of
Harlingen; Emestina Saenz of San
Diego; and Nirmal Goswami, a
Terri Welch
named Cotton
Bowl queen
Terri Welch of Dallas, and a
student at Texas A&M Univer-
sity, reigned as Cotton Bowl
Queen oq Jan. 1,1992. She is the
daughter of Gary and Alma Val-
erio Welch.
The queen is the granddaugh-
ter of Juanita Valerio, former! y of
La Rosita now residing in San
Antonio, and the late Felipe Val-
erio.

" Mingo" Chavera
RAMIREZ - Domingo
"Mingo" Chavera, 74, a lifelong
resident of Ramirez, died Thurs-
day, Jan. 23, at his residence after
a brief illness. He was retired
from Trinity Gas Corporation
after 25 years of employment,
He is survived by his wife.
HerminiaG. Chavera of Ramirez;
two daughters, Diana Saenz of
Benavides and Leticia Rios of
Rios; two sons, Hector M. Chav-
era of Alice and Jorge L. Chavera
of Ramirez; three brothers, Adan
Chavera of Laredo, Genaro Chav-
era of Tienditas, and Pablo Chav-
era of Ramirez; seven grandchil-
dren and one great-grandchild.
Rosary was recited Friday,
Jan. 24, at the Garza Funeral
Home Chapel in San Diego.
Funeral mass was celebrated
Saturday, Jan. 25. at Santa Rosa
De Lima Catholic Church in
Benavides. Burial followed at the
Benavides Cemetery.
Garza Funeral Home of San
Diego was in chaige of the ar-
rangements.

the W. E. Baker Pre-Law Schol-
arship. George Hernandez of
Sinton and Emestina Saenz also
received pre-law scholarships.
State representative Irma
Rangel (D-Kingsville), who
spoke to the group, was recog-
nized as an honorary member.
San Diego High School As-
sistant Principal Alvaro Garza has
announced that beginning on
Wednesday, Jan. 29, the after-
noon class schedule will change.
The sixth period remains the same
but the seventh period will be
what used to be the eighth period.
The new seventh period class
will meet from 2:05 - 2:55 p.m.
and the tutorial class (eighth pe-
riod) will meet from 3:00 - 3:30
p.m.
Additionally, Garzaaaid that
all junior and senior students who
have passed all areas of the Texas
Assessment of Academic Skills
(T.A.A.S.) will be dismissed at
the end of the seventh period.
"These changes became nec-
essary to better utilize our tutor-
ing time for subsequent improve-
ment of our scores," said Garza.
