Ryan Garcia helps design hospital ship
Two students ip the Tew
A AM College of Architecture are
currently completing a unique as-
signment Not only will they be
rewarded for their hard wort with
a grade, they will be helping thou-
sands of people in the process.
Ryan Garcia, a fifth-year stu-
dent from San Diego and Manor
Sora Koestoer, a fourth-year ar-
chitecture student from Indone-
sia, are designing a “floating hos-
pital” for Mercy Ships, a non-
profit organization that provides
free health care to underdeveloped
countries around the world.
The design calls for converting
an almost 600-foot-long, 1,200
passenger ocean liner into a hospi-
tal that will serve Asian and Pa-
cific Rim countries. The students
are completing the project under
the direction of Professor George
J. Mann, the Ronald L. Skaggs
Endowed Professor of Health Fa-
cilities Design.
The completed drawings will
initially be used to raise aware-
ness and funds for the new ship,

the "Asia Mercy.” After the de-
signs are reviewed by a marine
architect, they will be used for the
actual refitting of the vessel, which
will be the world’s largest, non-
governmental hospital ship. Mercy
Ships hopes to have “Asia Mercy,”
Jose Elizondo
fourth floating hospital, in service
by the year 2000.
Don Stephens, president and
CBO of Mercy Ships, said he is
impressed by the level of profes-
sionalism the students have dem-
onstrated
“We are quite pleased with the
design,” he said. “Not only are the
students intellectually involved,
they have put their hearts into the
project as well.”
Stephens said he first spoke
with Mann about the possibility of
such a project in 1993, after the
College of Architecture worked
on the ORB IS DC-IO flying eye
hospital. Mann then phoned
Mercy Ships in Decanter 1996,
after Koestoer expressed an inter-
est in designing a ship to serve his
native land of Indonesia. Stephens
said the call came less than 48
hours after he decided to expand
Mercy Ships to Asia.
In addition to the patients the
“Asia Mercy” will eventually
serve, Stephens said the project

will benefit the College of Archi-
tecture, its students, and Texas
A&M University as a whole.
"This project is just one of the
reasons I think students select

Ms. Gonzalez started receiv-
ing checks a month after her only
son died during his second tour of
duty in Vietnam.
The monthly checks for
spouses and dependent parents of
soldiers killed in combat started
out at $54. They grew over the
years to about $260 before they
stopped coming in 1992, she said.
Two years ago, the VA sent
Ms. Gonzalez a notice demanding
repayment for the checks that the
VA said were issued erroneously.

Ms. Gonzalez has battled the
VA bureaucracy in an attempt to
get the checks restarted and her
debt erased.
Chris Escamilla, Hidalgo
County Veteran’s Service Officer,
has tried to help Ms. Gonzalez get
the DIC benefits reinstated.
“The benefits are complicated
in that she’s a dependent mother
instead of adependent wife, so it’s
governed by different regulations,”
Escamilla said. “As a dependent
mother, her benefits are governed
by income, how much money she
makes.”
Escamilla said Ms. Gonzalez
would have a better chance of re-
ceiving benefits if she did not work.
