Flyers Top Hornets |T
To Open New Gym
The Louise Hornets
helped the St Joseph
Flyers open their new
gym Tuesday but Hornet
Coach Tom Lovejoy
would have prefered his
charges not be quite so
gracious to their hosts.
The Hornets, known for
their aggressive pressing
defense and fast breaks,
uncharacteristically let
the Flyers control the ac-
tion in a 77-58 St.
Joseph win in Victoria
“They outplayed us in
every phase of the
game,” Lovejoy said.
“We didn’t do anything
well We didn’t press
well. We didn’t run welL
We didn’t play defense
well ”
The Hornets were fresh
off a district season
opening victory over
Brazos that Lovejoy felt
may have left his players
‘flat.” Like the game
with Brazos and earlier
games with Kendleton,
penetrating Flyer guards
hurt Louise Tuesday. The
steal-oriented Hornet
defense relies on front
line support but that
system broke down
against the Flyers.
“Our inside people
haven’t been switching
off,” Lovejoy said.
“That’s part of our
defense. We force them
inside and switch off but
were just not doing it.”
Shannon Bowles, a
quick Flyer point guard,
led all scorers with 23
points. Michael Lykes,
Bowles’ backcourt
partner, added 22 to
ignite a third quarter
comeback by the home
team.
Louise held a 29-28
halftime edge but the
Flyers outscored the
Hornets 16-8 in the first
four minutes of the third
quarter. Bowles had
eight points in that
stretch with Lykes and
Luke Smolik chipping in
four apiece.
Elton Callis, who
knocked down 13 points to
again lead the Louise
scoring, hit a pair of
jumpers to pull within
four points of St. Joseph
at 4Mt The Flyers
maintained that edge
until, with two minutes
left in the quarter, St.
Joseph Coach Richard
Seiler objected to a foul
called sending Howard
Callis to the line
Seiler rushed unto the
court drawing a double
technical foul. Unlike
Friday’s game in which a
double technical foul late
in the game clinched
victory for Louise, the
Hornets could h;t only
two of their six free
throws. Jeff Seller then
scored six points in the
final minute of the
quarter to give St. Joseph
a 55-45 lead heading into
the game’s final eight
minutes.
Although Louise scored
the first points of the
fourth quarter, that eight
point deficit was as close
as the Hornets could get.
St. Joseph scored eight
unanswered points, in-
cluding six by Lykes, in
just two minutes. That
gave the Flyers a 63-47
lead that would not be
challenged.
The Hornet fast break
did work in the first half
as Louise converted
many fast break layups
Elton Callis, the, Louise
point guard and leading
scorer, picked up four
fouls in the first half,
however, and was forced
to ride the bench more
than usual.
Howard Callis, who has
not yet fully recovered
from a hand injury,
added 11 points for
Louise. Joe Malota also
tossed in 11 while John
Francis had seven.
“If we’re going to lose
one,” Lovejoy said, “this
one was a good one to
lose. It’s a non-district
game and maybe it’ll
wake us up a bit.”
The Hornets will return
to action Thursday, Dec.
30 in Hallettsville when
they visit Sacred Heart.
The “B” game will begin
at 6 p.m. District action
will resume Tuesday Jan.
4 against the Hornets’
biggest rival, Ganado.
The Indians will be in
Louise to face the Louise
boys and girls teams with
action slated to begin at 5
p.m.
