Area Students Recongized
At WCJCCommencement
Carol Wuthrich of
Pierce was given the 1982
President’s Award
during the 36th annual
Wharton County Junior
College commencement
exercises held Thursday
at 8 p.m. in the Wharton
High School stadium.
The award, which is
given to the “most out-
standing graduating
sophomore," is based on
scholarship, leadership
and participation in
extra-curricular ac-
tivities.
The Special Service
Award recipient was
Trisha J. Wood of
Wharton, who
distinguished herself in
the area of service to the
student body, faculty and
college.
Three other El Campo
students were honored.
Receiving the Dean’s
Award for earning 4.0
grade point averages
were Kelly Sue Janda,
Theresa Marie Kozel and
Carol Wuthrich. Terry
Michael Marek of Louise
won the Dean's Award
for earning a gpa of 3.88
A total of 260 graduates
received associate in arts
or applied science
diplomas from J. Daniel
Schuhmann of East
Bernard, chairman of the
board of trustees.

Proud Graduates
The El Campo Independent School District Opportunity Center held
graduation ceremonies at the El Campo Country Club for three of its
students Thursday. Diplomas were presented by school board member
Michael Plentl and Administrator Bill Dowden. During the ceremony,
Janice Cox gave a special vocal presentation of "My Way.” Pictured
from left to right are graduates: Ronnie Faniel, Laddie Prochazka and
James Hudspeth.
Pedestrians Hurt
In Hit And Run
Police arrested a 20-
year old man Friday
morning and charged
him with failure to stop
and render aid after
three people were injured
in a hit and run accident
which occurred at 600
Wright St.
Louis Salazar, 1607
Lilly, was arrested after
a vehicle which he was
driving skidded on gravel
and struck Tina Manciaz
and Jesse Manciaz, both
of 1610 Charlie.
Also injured in the
accident was Beatrice
Manciaz, 1610 Charlie.
The injuries occurred
when Tina Manciaz and
Jesse Manciaz were
struck by the car
knocking the two into
Beatrice Manciaz All
three refused medical
treatment.
Salazar was released
on a $500 bond.
Janie Guel De La Cruz,
1004 Flax, told police that
she was assaulted at her
mobile home Thursday
morning. She refused
medical treatment
Paul Roades, 606
Lincoln, told police four
hubcaps, valued at $120,
were stolen from 200 N.
Washington Thursday
afternoon.
Tom Gaines, 2414
Hancock Lane, told
police that a theft oc-
curred at his home
sometime between May
15 and 16 A motorcycle,
valued at $300, was
reported missing
The Texas Department
of Public Safety arrested
Pete Ramos of Pasadena
Thursday and charged
him with driving while
intoxicated. Ramos was
arrested at I S 59 and
FM 1163 He posted a
$1.000 bond
DPS also stopped Jesse
Gibson of El Campo on
Wednesday and charged
him with DWI. He posted
a $500 bond.
Jimmy Long, West
Alfred Street, was
arrested Wednesday and
charged with carrying a
prohibited weapon. Long
was arrested on Highway
71 and posted a $500 bond.
First Refund Check
Mailed With New Rate
State Comptroller Bob
Bullock recently mailed
the state s first tax re
fund checks paying tax-
payers the same rate of
interest as the state
charges for delinquent
taxes
"For the first time, the
state and the taxpayer
get the same interest on
overpayments and delin-
quent taxes— 10
percent," Bullock said
Before I>egislature set
the 10 percent rate last
year, taxpayers were
charged 7 percent on
delinquent taxes but
received 6 percent on
protested payments and
no interest on over-
payments. Bullock ex-
plained
The higher interest
rate on overpayments
will cause an estimated
$28 million to be paid tax
payers over the next four
fiscal years, Bullock
said Estimates attacked
to Senate Bill 196, which
raised both delinquent
and overpayment in-
terest rates, projected
$694,000 will be paid tax-
payers in interest during
the current state fiscal
year: $i 8 milium in
fiscal 1983, $6 3 million in
1984; $8 3 million in 1985
and $9 4 million in 1986
The warrants mailed
represented nearly
$60,000 in refunds and in-
terest on motor vehicle,
motor fuel and sales
taxes overpaid by 24
Texas taxpayers in
January
Future refund
payments will be pro-
cessed and mailed daily
by the Comptroller
