Falcons Win 5-4 To Tie Cardinals For First
Astros 18 Colts 13
The Pee Wee League Falcons
and Braves went into extra inn-
ings Wednesday before the
Falcons emerged with a hard-
fought 5-4 win and a share of first
place.
The win upped the Falcons
record to 7-1 which ties them for
first with the Cardinals. The
Braves fell to fourth place in the
division, one game behind the 6 2
Astros.
Wednesday’s contest was a
tight ball game throughout as
both teams played to the best of
their abilities. Both teams scored
four runs in the first inning
before tight defense held the
game scoreless until the seventh
inning.
The Falcons then got the winn-
ing run on Jeff Woodyard’s fourth
hit of the game.
“At the first of the game, every
boy came out swinging and runn-
ing,’’ reported Braves Manager
Johnnie Staff. “After that inning,
it was a defensive ball game.’’
Woodyard received plenty of
hitting support from his team-
mates as Ross Martinez smacked
a double and three singles while
Wesley Appling and Daniel Subea
each had four singles. Mike Gon-
zales tripled while David Ebbara
had two singles and Brian Perez
one.
The Braves countered with a
balanced, 13-hit attack as Kirk
Marek, Joel Banda, Mike Staff,
Daniel Rosales and Scott Rod all
had a pair of singles. Brian Kunz,
Jason Monroe and Wesley Morton
added singles.
Mike Staff, Scott Rod, Daniel
Subea, Wesley Appling and Jeff
Woodyard (2) had RBIs in the
game.
Astros 18 Colts 13
The Astros moved into second
place in the Pee Wee League race
Wednesday when Grady Smith
tripled in the eighth inning scor-
ing Grant Tripp to earn a nip-and-
tuck 5-4 win over the Mustangs.
The game was close throughout
as the Astros led 3-2 after the first
inning. They saw their lead
evaporate in the fourth when the
Mustangs scored one run for a tie
ball game.
The Astros took another lead in
the fifth with three hits and a run
but the Mustangs came back
again and tied the score in the
sixth inning to send the game into
overtime.
There were plenty of hitting
stars in the game with Adam Pfiel
of the Mustangs and Jason Moore
of the Astros certainly at the head
of the class. Pfiel had a home run
and three singles while Moore
smashed a round tripper to go
with two singles.
Tripp had two doubles and a
single for the Astros while Chad
Graham smacked a double and
two singles. Donnie Meyers also
had three hits, all singles for the
winners.
Smith had a single to go with his
game-winning triple while Justin
Moran and Brian Krpec both had
a pair of singles. Aaron Butler and
Chris Huvar also added hits.
Thomas Foster had a good day
at the plate for the Mustangs as he
smacked a triple and a single
while James Bufford, Travis
Clark and James King added two
hits apiece.
Leonard Foyt tripled in the con-
test while Brent Bubella, Carl Cox
and Tracy Griffin added singles.
The Astros played a very dif-
ferent type of baseball game
Tuesday as they exploded for
eight runs in the fourth inning and
seven more in the fifth for a 18-13
win over the Colts.
The Colts took a 6-3 lead in the
third when they scored five runs
but the Astros simply had too
much fire power on that day.
Even a four-run sixth inning was
not enough to catch the eventual
winners.
Graham again had another ex-
cellent game Tuesday as he
smashed a home run and three
singles. Grady Smith also
homered in the game and blasted
a triple to boot.
Tyson King was the Colts’ hit-
ting star as he smashed a home
run and two triples in the game.
Grant Tripp and Brian Krpec
both had a triple and three singles
while Donnie Myers added two
doubles and a single. Aaron
Butler had a double and two
singles in he game while Jason
Moore got on four times with
singles
/ 'l
Justin Moran had two hits while
Chris Huvar chipped in with a
double. Jonathan Grahmann,
Steven Sanders and Eric Moore
all added singles.
Jim Leach had a good day for
the Colts as he smacked a triple
and three singles. Chris Jackson,
Clint Radley and Heath Voldan
each added a double and a single.
Kevin Korenek, Russell Marek
and Ronnie Rodrequez all had two
singles for the Colts while Chuck
Watson, Kenny Moore and
Jeremy Holub added one hit
apiece.

Will Face New Braunfels Monday
’Birds Practice With Win
By JONATHAN FEIGEN
Every hit, run or pitch by the
Ricebirds this week was done with
the bi-district playoffs with New
Braunfels in mind.
On Wednesday, they worked on
some of the things they might
employ against the 13-AAAA
champions in a practice game
with the Sweeny Bulldogs. El
Campo continued its winning
ways by taking a 5-1 six inning
decision.
While the Ricebirds were busy
shuffling pitchers and practicing
plays, New Braunfels had more
important business to take care
of. They entered Wednesday’s ac-
tion with a one game lead in their
series against Uvalde after a 9-4
win on Tuesday.
Uvalde won the second game of
the series 10-7 but the Unicorns
came back in the night-cap with a
7-5 victory for the right to face the
Ricebirds.
The Ricebirds will travel to
New Braunfels Monday for a 7
p.m. start before hosting the
Unicorns Tuesday at 7 p.m. at
KAL Park If a third game is nec
cesary, it will be held Thursday in

count in any standings, it is a safe
bet that Coach Ed Campbell is
pleased to see his team finish on
top of any game.
“Winning breeds winning,”
Campbell said “You don’t get
that sour taste in your mouth.”
It has been more than a month
since El Campo had that sour
taste as they are riding a six game
winning streak into the playoffs
(not including Wednesday’s
Sweeny game and the rained out
Terry game). They have won 11 of
their last 12 contests.
They started on the right foot
Wednesday with Tim Parma and
Darrell Harton both getting
singles from their number two
and three spots on the lineup.
Barry Smith walked before Glenn
Nohavitza slammed a double for
two RBIs
Sweeny helped the Ricebirds to
their sixth inning runs with three
walks and a hit batsmen although
Jeff Socha did get an RBI with a
line-drive single
The game gave Campbell an op-
portunity to work on things he
usually does not use extensively in
games. He called for more bunts
and pick off plays than usual
while Smith worked on his curve
ball more often in his one inning of
mound action.
Campbell also gave Jeff
Knebel, Allen Heard and Pat
Krpec work with Tuesday’s se-
cond game possibly in mind.
