Congratulations to the Coo-
per Football team. They beat
the Henrietta Bearcats at the
C.H. Collins Stadium in Den-
ton Friday evening in the Class
2 A Division II Area Playoff
game. We are very proud of
those Cooper boys (Several of
them are from the Charleston
Area.) They will play Scurry-
Rosser in a regional playoff
game at 7:30 p.m. on Friday in
the Royse City Stadium. Good
luck, Bulldogs. Several people
from Delta County went to
Denton to see those bulldogs
play, even several people from
the East End went to that game
even though the weather was
bad.
The Paris Noon Study Club
met Wednesday, Nov. 20 in
the Paris Jr. College meeting
room of the Student Union
Building. Mr. Doug Weiberg,
the Veterans Memorial Presi-
dent, was the guest speaker.
He talked about the Red River
Valley Veterans Memorial and
their plans for the future. He
showed pictures of the Memo-
rial to the group. It was a very
interesting meeting. The next
meeting will be Wednesday,
December 18, in the Calvary
United Methodist Church in
Paris, in the Joy classroom at
11:30 a.m. This will be our
Christmas luncheon.
Katie Malone had her
Thanksgiving dinner Sunday.
Her whole family was there.
Her grandson Dawson Ham-
ner spent several days of his
holidays with her.
Are you old enough to re-
member the day when Presi-
dent John F. Kennedy was shot
and killed? Where were you
that fatefull day 50 years ago?
I was teaching 7^ grade Eng-
lish at Agnew Jr. High School
in Mesquite when the Prin-
cipal came over the intercom
and told us that the President
had been shot. In a short time
he came back on the speaker
and told us that the President
was dead. That was a sad time.
Several of my students were
absent from school that day.
Their parents had taken them
to see the President.
Katie was a senior at Cooper
High School. She was working
in Mr. Pardue’s office when
someone called to tell them.
She took the call.

rie Ingram, and the Children’s
Time Leader was Jennie Pick-
ering. Conlee Murray and

dle lighters. The Children’s
Christmas Program will be
Sunday, December 8. All chil-
dren of the Church will be in
the program.

cember 14, at 11 o’clock. Meet

Have a good week!

Happy Thanksgiving,
everyone!! I think it is
significant that the busiest
holiday season of the year
begins with a day set aside for
giving thanks. By taking time
to thank God for his goodness
to us, we can discount the
fruitless rushing about that
some feel later. So, take a sheet
of paper and pen and literally
make a list of all the things you
are thankful for. Then read it
during the rest of the year. Bet
it makes a difference.
Patricia Blundell visited
with daughter Rebecca by
phone this week. Savannah
Hunt accompanied Patricia to
church on Sunday.
George and Pearl Foster had
Danielle and Daniel visit on
Wednesday after church. Great
grandson Dustin and great
granddaughter Kobe visited on
Saturday.
Wanda Helms celebrated
her birthday on Thursday but
Amber said she had a Birth-
week! The girls put a sign in
the yard saying “Happy 75th,
Gran”. No secrets in this
family!! On Thursday evening,
the whole family (except 4 who
had to work) came for a surprise
party. Everyone brought food -
including a beautiful cake - and
had a great time. The family
gathered again on Sunday for
a family lunch of homemade
chili, soup, cornbread and fritos.
There were also sandwich
makings for any that wanted
one.
Mabel Wheat had Delores
Gillean come by one day last
week for a visit. Mabel, Delores,
Betty Guffey and Jerrell all
enjoyed the time. On Sunday
Gaylon Maddox brought Mabel
her lunch from the Silver
Skillet - turkey and dressing
with all the trimmings. Looks
like Mabel will be celebrating
Thanksgiving all week!
Billy Martin had daughter
Cassie Gunn visit Saturday for
several hours. Also visiting
were Dionna, Ross and Tristin.
Steve Rainey was home alone
when I called on Sunday. Tina
was out - could she have been
visiting with Elise? To be fair,
Steve would have been there
also except he wasn’t feeling
just right and didn’t want to
pass it on.
To all long-time Klondike
residents: I had a phone call
recently from Elizabeth Ann
Martin (maiden name. Sorry,
Elizabeth, you gave me your
married name and since I didn’t
write it down, I forgot.) We
visited a while about the old
Klondike Church chapel being
torn down. She expressed
regrets about that. She also
told me that she graduated from
West Delta High School in
1955. If you were a classmate
of hers and want to contact her,
I do have her phone number.
Maggie Thomas said New
Life Baptist Church had a
special day Sunday. About forty
(+/-) “little people” came to the
front of the church to lead the
congregation in singing “Step
by Step with Jesus” complete
with hand motions. Afterward,
Bro. Larry brought a timely
message on Walking in the
Spirit from Ephesians, chapter
5. After that, Maggie attended a
thanksgiving dinner sponsored
by New Hope Church and held
at the high school cafeteria. As
usual, there was lots of food
left over. Ethel invited Maggie
to go home with her and help
divide the food into carry
out containers for delivery to
shut-ins in the community that
afternoon. Everyone brought
food, but Charlie and Cynthia
Stewart cooked all the turkeys
and hams for the dinner. Thanks
to everyone who helped but
special thanks to them for that.

61s* Wedding Anniversary
Friday afternoon, November
22, 2013, 4 to 7 pm at the
Pecan Gap Community
Center. Over 60 friends,
neighbors, and family
attended the festive occasion.
A delicious meal was served
along with anniversary cake
and sparkling water for the
toast. Helping with the event
were their daughter and
husband, Debbie and Tommy
Hughes, their niece Michelle
Strickland served the cake,
and Mrs. Ty (Natalie) Hughes
served the punch. Their
two grandsons, Ty Hughes
and Brandon Stephens
were present to help them
celebrate. Sam of Uvalde
met Mary Alice of Sabinal at
a basketball game where she
was playing ball. They wed
the following November.
They moved to Pecan Gap
in 1958 after Sam’s Army
service. Sam and Mary
Alice operated a honey bee
business from 1957 to 1986
spending summers in Miller,
South Dakota and winters
in Pecan Gap. In 1958 they
were blessed with a daughter
Deborah and 1961 a son
Sam. (We in Pecan Gap are
blessed to have Mary Alice
and Sam living in Pecan Gap
and they were instrumental in
bringing our Mayor, Warner
Cheney, to Pecan Gap as he
moved here to help Sam in the
bee business years ago. We
wish them many more happy
blissful years together!)
Congratulations to Round
Top Carmine for winning first
place in class 1-A State Volley
Ball Play Off Tournament in
Garland on Saturday. Brooke
Conley, daughter of Mark
and Linda Conley, helped
the girls win. The girls were
in the play offs last year but
lost their last game. Those
from Pecan Gap that traveled
to Garland to watch Brooke
play were her grandmother,
Joy Conley, her brother
Lance Conley, and her uncle
and aunt, Randy and Mindy
Conley. Way to go Brooke!
Keep Fredia Clark in your
prayers. Fredia has been in
ICU in the Greenville hospital
for the past 7 days. James
Sidney reports that she had
improved one day, but the
next day she lost some of the
improvement. Also, keep
Ancil and Betty Davis in your
prayers as both are having
serious health problems.
Have a safe, healthy, and
happy Thanksgiving Holidays
and appreciate your loved
ones!
It is a sad time for those of
us that have lost loved ones,
but we must thank God for the
good memories and the time
that we shared together.

a visit from Santa later. Brisket
will be furnished and residents
should bring side dishes and
desserts. Make plans to come

A Swig of Chock
Anyone?
One time Wick Pender and I
decided to make a jug of home
brew just to see if we could.
Home brew is a terrible drink
that black folks called “Chock.”
To make it, Wick and I put
some com and a few slices of
apple in a gallon jug of water,
added some yeast and set it out
in the sun. I never understood
the chemistry, but with that
yeast in it, it would begin to
“work.” The cloudy concoction
would chum inside the jug.
We decided that it wasn’t
working hard enough, so we
added more yeast. And later,
for good measure, we added
even more yeast. Then the
chock really began to chum
around in the jug.
Finally it settled down, and we
decided that we had completed
the process of making home
brew. We strained it through
a cloth, and it was ready to
drink. But who was going
to drink it? I didn’t want to
and neither did Wick, but we
thought of a likely person to
test the product, Cider Young.

Cider was a very pleasant
fellow who was known to “pull
a cork” now and then, so we
decided to give it to him. He
didn’t drink it in our presence,
and we wondered if he would
ever dare take a sip. About a
week later I saw Cider, and got
the answer.
“What in the hell did you
boys put in that home brew,”
he laughed. “I have never had
such a headache in my life!”
We should have gone easier
on the yeast, I guess. That was
our one and only attempt at
making home brew.
