UT Scholarship Winners
Two El Campo High
School graduates are the
recipients of the 1982 Nan
Bennett Outlar Texas
Excellence Scholarship
given by the Wharton
County Texas Exes Club.
Both students will enroll
in The University of
Texas at Austin this fall.
Each student will
receive a $500 scholar-
ship check which will be
presented in Austin in
September at a banquet
at the Alumni Center on
the UT campus The
banquet is given in honor
of all students receiving
alumni scholarships.

This year’s winners of
the Outlar scholarship
are Kirk Dee Houston
and Jonathan Eric
TTionsgaard.
Houston, the son of Mr.
and Mrs Philip C.
Houston, 601 Meadow
l^ine, plans to study
petroleum engineering at
Texas. His ultimate
career goal is to gain
employment with a
major oil company as a
petroleum engineer.
The ECHS honor
student, who finished
fifth in his class with a
grade average of 95.32,
has been active while in
JONATHAN
THONSGAARD
school. He was vice
president of the National
Honor Society, vice
president of the German
Club, reporter for the
Future Teachers of
America, is a member of
Delta Epsilon Phi and
Who’s Who, was a
member of the Science
Club, earned two varsity
letters in golf, one in
varsity football, played
junior varsity baseball
and was a member of the
German Folk Dancers
Out of school activities
include Boy Scouts of
America, Church of
Christ and Senior League
baseball
Thonsgaard, son of Mr.
and Mrs David Thon-

also plans to pursue a
degree and career in
petroleum engineering,
and perhaps farming He
graduated from ECHS in
1961 and just completed a
year at Wharton County
Junior College.
In high school he was a
member of the National
Honor Society. Future
Farmers of America,
Wharton County
DeMolay Club and the
Luther League.
He received a “Best in
Mathematics" award in
the National High School
Math Exam, and he won
third place two con-
secutive years at the
State Industrial Arts
Fair.
In addition to the
scholarship to The
University of Texas,
Thonsgaard received a
$300 Stovall scholarship.
The Wharton County
Texas Exes scholarship
committee included
David Zalman, club
president, Nan Outlar,
Jane Weinheimer and
John Roades, past
president. Money for the
scholarships is raised
each year at the club’s
annual banquet.

Honor Victoria
Diocese, Bishop
Plans are in the final
stages for the celebration
of the new Victoria
diocese of the Catholic
Church Saturday at 10
a.m.
Church leaders,
government and com-
munity dignitaries . will
join with the people from
throughout the 10 coun-
ties of the new Catholic
congregation to celebrate
the erection of the Vic-
toria diocese and the
seating of the first
bishop, His Excellency,
The Most Rev Charles V
Grahmann. The
ceremonies will be held
at Our Lady of Victory
Church which will
become a cathedral on
the same day.

the new diocese which

Catholics including 69

There are 44 parishes,
26 missions, 14 parochial
schools, 1 mother house,
2 Catholic hospitals and 1
Catholic nursing home
within the boundaries of
the diocese.
Calhoun, Colorado,
DeWitt, Fayette, Goliad,
Jackson, Lavaca,
Matagorda, Victoria, and
Wharton counties are in
the diocesea geographic
make-up. The assign-
ment of some diocesan
officials and consultors
will also be announced
following the formal
ceremonies on Saturday.
The public is invited to
join in the ceremonies
and following reception.
Railroad Commission
Chairman Jim Nugent
announced that 64
refineries in Texas pro-
cessed 110,955,831 barrels
of crude oil and
hydrocarbon blends dur-
ing February.
This volume compared
with 122,481,979 barrels in
the previous February,
the Commission’s Oil and
Gas Division reported in
its monthly recapitula-
tion of Texas refinery
operations. Inputs of
crude oil and blends
totaled 133,375,817 bar-
rels in January.
Texas refineries ran
83,588,532 barrels of
crude oil in February
compared to 97,799,434
barrels in February 1981
and 104,484,624 barrels in
January 1982.
Products manufac-
tured in February totaled
111,532,276 barrels, down
from 122,892,659 barrels
in the same month the
previous year, and down
from the 125,783,901 bar
rels in January.
February manufacture
of motor gasoline totaled
44,589,589 barrels, com
pared to 47.313.765 bar
rels in the year-earlier
month and 50,451,569 bar-
rels in January.
Texas refineries
manufactured 8,784,655
barrels of home heating
oil in February, a
decrease of 3,385,111 bar-
rels from the year-earlier
volume. January output
was 12,283,347 barrels.
