Congratulations are in
order for CLINT HEARD
who was elected co-
captain for the 1983 Texas
A&M baseball team last
week
Heard and junior
pitcher Rock King were
the first captains elected
before the season during
Coach Tom Chandler’s 25
years at the Aggie helm.
Heard was an all-
district second baseman
and pitcher for the El
Campo Ricebirds before
moving on to Aggieland
where he has become a
surprisingly good hitter
and steady fielder.
Chandler, with older
second basemen on hand,
planned to red shirt
Heard last season but
injuries forced Heard
into action. The
righthander’s hot bat and
ability to work at third
base and shortstop kept
him on the Aggie team
and in the Aggie lineup.
Heard finished the
season with a .317 overall
batting average after
hitting .346 in conference
play. He worked in the
Illinois Collegiate
Inviational League in
Quincy, 111. last summer
and batted an out-
standing .391.

Heard is the latest in a
long line of FORMER EL
CAMPO STARS that
have been collegiate
leaders.
Paul Humphreys
captained the Houston
Cougar football teams of
1976 and 1977 when the
Cougars won their first
Cotton Bowl. Greg
Harman, who also earned
a Cotton Bowl ring, was a
tri-captain on the 1982
Cougar squad.
Three former El
Campo players, Mark
Appling, Glenn Kahanek
and Alex Francis, served
as tri-captains on a WCJC
football team.
Sherri Kieth was a
Pioneer volleyball
captain bringing the
number of collegiate
captains with Ricebird
experience in the last
decade to six.
Pretty impressive.
