Reverend Cowan ministering in town where he was raised

()ne of Ingleside's own, a youngster
educated in the local schools and a
long-time member of the First Baptist
Church where his father was a
deacon, is the minister of the Church
of the New Testament
Lewis Cowan came to Ingleside
with his parents, W.A. and Dorothy
Cowan, when he was three years old.
Mr . (Iowan worked for Humble Oil and
Refining Company at Ingleside until it
closed in 1946 He then was employed
at the Sinclair Refinery in Corpus
Christi.
Lewis, the oldest of seven children,
graduated from high school in 1954
He played football and took part in
other sports, most memorable being
his time on the champion football
team coached by Emery Bellard
Lewis played in the high school band
and recalls his years in the local
schools with pleasure
Lewis’ brothers and sisters, Leon,
Dawnese, Darlene, W.A., Jr., Robert
and David, all attended Ingleside
schools with all except the latter three
graduating here They moved to South
Houston when Mr. Cowan was trans-
ferred by Sinclair Oil Company.
Lewis joined the air force after
finishing school and married Patsy
Phillips who is also from Ingleside.
They hsve three children, Lewis, Jr.
who lives at Deer Park with his wife,
Rachel DeBerry who lives in Portland
with her husband and two children,
and Leslie who still lives at home and
works atJ.C. Penny in Corpus Christi.
She plans to be married soon.
After getting out of the air foroe,
Lewis attended East Texas Baptist
College, attending school the year
round and planning to graduate in
three years. Becoming exhausted by
the round-the-clock study, he quit
college after two years
The Reverend Lewis Cowan began
his ministery when he was 18 years
old at the Seoond Baptist Church in
Victoria. He has served the Central
Baptist Church in Ingleside twice and
has served at other Baptist Churches
in Corpus Christi. He organised the
Church of the New Testament and has
been its minister for ten years.
The churches where he has served
have been small churches and he has
had to work. He is a commercial

JONES
Laverne Jones, 48, passed away Fri-
day, March 25, in Long Beach, Missis-
sippi.
Mrs. Jones was born on May 24,
19.19 in Ingleside and resided there
until she moved to Long Beach in
1979. She was a member of the Cal-
vary Baptist Church of Ingleside.
She is survived by her husband.
John J. Jones of Long Beach; two
daughters, Cynthia R. Griffin and Ros-
lyn Irene Griffin, both of Long Beach;
a son, William R. Griffin III of long
Beach; two sisters, Charlene Cassel of
Grand Prairie and Lela Forrester of
Corpus Christi; and three brothers.

LYNCH
Robert William Lynch, Sr., 69, pas-
sed away Tuesday, March 29.
He was born in Havana, Illinois on
December 30, 1918 and had been a
resident of Ingleside for the past six
years. He was a retired grain mill su-
perintendent. He was a member of the
First Baptist Church. He was pre-
ceded in death by two grandchildren.
Survivors include four sons, Robert
Lynch, Jr. of Rockport, Don Lynch of
Austin, Ryant Lynch of Ingleside and
Roger Lynch of Arlington; and nine
grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 4
p.m. Friday at the Marshall-Ramey
Funeral Home Chapel in Aransas Pass
licensed instrument rated airplane
pilot, is in construction and has an
inspection company inspecting weld-
ing and pressure vessels, and works
part time with Goldston Engineering
Company. He plays the piano and
paints, two of his sources of pleasure.
Cowan describes the Church of the
New Testament as inter-
denominational or non-
denominational and stated that his
wish would be to have all barriers and
differences between Christian de-
nominations broken down. He feels,
however, that apathy is the most
dangerous threat to religion

Carolina L. Pena, 66, of Ingleside
passed away Thursday, March 24, in
an Aransas Pass hospital.
She was bom in Kennedy on May
23, 1921.
Survivors include two sisters,
To mas its Resendez and Jesusa Vas-
quez, both of Ingleside; four brothers,
Jose and Inez Pena, both of Ingleside,
Felipe Pena of Skidmore, and Anista-
sio Pena of Washington State; and a
number of nieces and nephews.
Rosary was recited at 7 p.m. Sunday
at the Marshall-Ramey Funeral Home
Chapel. Funeral Mass was celebrated
at 2 p.m. Monday at Our Lady of the
Assumption Catholic Church with
Rev. James Hamilton officiating. In-
terment followed at Gregory
Cemetery.
