listed as a total loss.
Mrs. Compton was treated
in the emergency room of
Memorial Hospital and then
admitted to the hospital. She
was reported to be “doing
well” by a hospital
spokesman early Monday
morning.
No damage was reported to
the bank drive-in window or
building.
Jim Williamson, vice
president of Kermit State
Bank, praised Williams’
quick-thinking in driving the
car into the parking lot to
avoid injury to other persons
in the area and to prevent
damage, to the bank. He
pointed out that Williams is
an amateur radio operator
(K5JOG) and as such had
received emergency training.
“It certainly took courage
to jump into a burning car
that could explode again at
any time,” Williamson said.
“We are all very grateful to
Kenneth for his assistance. He
helped to prevent what could
have been a major crisis.”
Less than 30 minutes after
the car exploded, the fire had
!■ (Continued from Page 1)
been extinguished by local
firemen, and glass from
windows of the vehicle that
had been scattered over a
wide area around the drive-in
window area of the bank, had
been cleaned up by firemen
and bank officers.

In reporting about the
“confidence game”, Kermit
Police Chief Melvin Bartley
urged all local residents to
“be very careful if they are
contacted in this manner.”
“Don’t hesitate to call the
bank or whatever place of
business is mentioned and
verify what you have been
told,” he said.
“Or, if you prefer . . . call
us here at the Kermit Police
Department or the Sheriffs
Department. We will be glad
to check, and help prevent
any activity of this nature,”
the police chief said.

Benjamin Franklin
When Benjamin Franklin was
the official printer of paper
currency for the colony of Penn-
sylvania he devised a unique plan
to thwart counterfeiters. Frank-
lin designed money containing
the prints of actual leaves, since
he had observed that no two are
alike.
VEHICLE TOTALED
Mrs. R. H. Compton’s 1974 Plymouth was listed as a total loss after it exploded in the
driveway of Kermit State Bank Saturday morning. A leak in the car’s butane fuel system
was apparently ignited, causing the explosion as Mrs. Compton was preparing to drive away
from one of the bank’s drive-in windows.
