Holiday shopping
temptation is risky

competition on Saturday, Nov. Kingsville. Game time is

CORPUS CHRISTI - The
Christmas shopping season is in
full swing, and for many consum-
ers the temptation to overspend is
simply too great. Holiday shop-
pers need to budget their pur-
chases to avoid having financial
hardships next year.
Lori Pridgen, community in-
formation director for Consumer
Credit Counseling Service of
South Texas, says that Christmas
is often idealized in the media
and many people feel obliged to
spend arid spend. If they fail to
monitor their purchases, espe-
cially those bought on credit,
problems can develop.
CCCS offers tfe following
holiday "survival skills":
1. Create a Christmas Budget.
A good rule of thumb is to spend
approximately 1.5 % of youi
annual gross income on gifts.
Here are some recommended
spending levels:
• S 1 5,000 = 5225 ;
$20,000=5300; $25,000=5375,
530,000=5450; 535,000=5525;
540,000=5600; $45,000=5675;
$50,000=5750;
2. Consider Alternatives to
Expensive Gifts. Some ideas are:
• give IOU's for services
(from accounting to car washes)
• buy used furniture and re-
finish to use as gifts;
• give gifts of needlework,
crafts, treasured recipes etc.;
• make gifts of home-baked
goods and/or put together baskets
of fruit, cheese, wine;
• agree not to exchange gifts
with adults, instead putting em-
phasis on the children;
