Oran Garcia featured student

Oran Garcia, San Diego Stu-
dent of the Week, has finally
completed his longtime goal of
becoming an Eagle Scout. This
Boy Scout project has included
his many hours of volunteer
work, including the beautifica-
tion of a park.
Oran has had many goals for
his senior year in addition to
achieving Eagle Scout status.
Some goals include preparing for
his college career and graduating
from S.D. High.
One particular goal, becoming
a member of the National Honor
Society, has also been fulfilled.
He, along with other new mem-
bers, will be inducted into the
Society later this year.
Oran has filled his last year at
SDHS with many extracurricular
activities. He holds membership
in the Vaquero band and football
team, Drama Club, Student
Council, F.T.A., One-Act Play,
and the newly organized. Future
Scientists of America.
When asked about the possi-
bility of world peace, he stated,
"They (world nations) have to
respect each other's differences
and stop judging each other."
Describing himself as consid-
erate, friendly, and loyal, he seeks
these characteristics, along with
open communication, as the basis
for his friendships.
Oran lists Italian food, sea-
food. springtime, and the color
blue as part of his favorites list.
Rock and Roll, author Stephen
King, and "anything with wheels
and moves" also appear on his
SAN DIEGO - Tonight, Feb.
21, is the last week to register to
participate in the San Diego Little
Miss Kickball program. The
league will be taking applications
at the Civic Center beginning at
7:00 PM.
League president Betty Lou
Garcia also invites all coaches
and parents to attend a short
meeting that same evening.

Little League officers will meet
tonight, Feb. 21, at the Junior
High Cafeteria at 7:30 PM.
On Thursday, Feb. 22, there
will be a meeting of all managers,
coaches and individuals wishing
to volunteer their services. This
meeting will also be at the Junior
High Cafeteria and starts at 7:30
PM.

years, he forsees himself success
fully working as a computer engi-
neer for a large corporation.

cation is important to him, he
replied, "Many more successful
and productive opportunities
come with a college degree."
Except for a brief period when
he attended preschool in Corpus
Qp&ir Oran has lived in San
Diego for most of his life. He is
the son of Mr. and Mrs. Roel H.
Garcia of San Diego. Isela, his
12-year-old sister, is his only sib-
ling and attends Bemarda Jaime
Jr. High.

San Diego - Reynaldo Ruiz,
81, passed away Friday, Feb. 16
in a Coipus Christi hospital.
He is survived by his wife,
Maria De La Luz B. Ruiz of San
Diego; two sons, Homero Ruiz of
Lansing, Michigan; and Rey-
naldo Ruiz Jr. of Houston; two
daughters, Beatrice Rodriguez of
Zeeland, Michigan; and Jovita
Navejar of Bryan; 16 grandchil-
dren; and eight great-grandchil-
dren.
A rosary was recited Sunday,
Feb. 18, at Garza Funeral Home
Chapel. Funeral Mass was cele-
brated Monday Feb. 19, at St.
Francis De Paula Catholic
Church. Burial was followed at
the San Diego Cemetery.
Garza Funeral Home (for-
merly Garcia-Rios Mortuary)
was in charge of the arrange-
ments.
