'48 Sun Bowl Memento Replacement Made

Travel broadens and also '
wears, If the experiences of Paul
Dietzel, head football coach of a
U.S. Military Academy and a par-
ticipant in the 1948 Sun Bowl,
are routine
Dietzel, as a member of the
Miami of Ohio team which beat<:
Texas Tech in the 1948 game
here, received a hand-tooled belt
which had tooled on it, "Sun
Bowl 1948". The belt was a size
34 and wore very well during
Dietzel first years out of college.
But, as time passed and Diet-
zel began moving up the coach-
ing ladder the belt began to wear
out. A friend tried to make a
substitute for him but it wasn't
suitable. He also tried to buy a
similar belt but without success.
EARLIER THIS month Dietzel
received some information and a
letter on this year's Sun Bowl
game from Game Chairman C
B. Bobo. Dietzel wasted no time
in replying, pointing out he has
always remembered with appre-
ciation his Sun Bowl experiences
and the fine people he met.
"I would like nothing better
than to be able to bring my
Army team to the Sun Bowl be- W. J. (Bill) MYERS of Myres Saddle Co. puts the finishing
cause I remember the wonderful touches to a belt prepared for West Point Football Coach Paul
time I had," Dietzel said Dietzel. Looking on is Sun Bowl chairman C. B. Bobo. Dietzel
has asked for a replacement for the belt he received for play-
HE ALSO recounted his exper- ing with the Miami of Ohio team in the 1948 Sun Bowl game.fences with his Sun Bowl belt
and asked if it would be possible
to obtain another one. But, he
added, it would have to be a
little larger than the 34-inch belt
he wore in 1948. "Better make
it a 38 or 40", said Dietzel.
Sun Carnival officials wasted
little time in getting in touch
with the man who made the origi-
nal belt, W. J. (Bill) Myres of
Myres Saddle Co. Myres dupli-
cated the belt and attached the
original buckle which Dietzel had
mailed to Bobo. The buckle had
been made locally by Graves
Malone, a prominent jewler, de-
ceased.
"I REMEMBER when we made
the original belts we only had
about three or four days to hand
tool something like 100 belts.
Most of them were 30 to 34
inches long. We shuddered when
we saw some of those linemen.
We had to make new and longer
ones for those 225-pounders who
played for Miami", he recalled.
The belt and original buckle
are now enroute to Dietzel at
West Point with another remind-
er than the Sun Bowl would de-
light in having Dietzel again in
the Sun Bowl-this time as head
football coach of Army.I
