"I have long thought that the story about the West and the
Southwest is our most interesting history, and I hope that many
will enjoy it." C. R. Smith, who wrote this in a letter to Chan-
cellor Harry H. Ransom, has done a great deal toward the study
and enjoyment of this phase of American History at the Univer-
sity by presenting a valuable 575-volume collection of books
to the University library. These books were collected by Smith
over many years and cover cowboys, discovery, outlaws, Indians,
Texana, the West, painters and illustrators of the West such
as Frederic Remington and Charles M. Russell, and transporta-
tion (Smith is president of American Airlines). The collection
will be housed in the library of the Eugene C. Barker Texas
History Center and will be designated the Marion Burch Smith
Collection in memory of his mother.
Dr. and Mrs. Herbert Gambrell of the Hall of State in Dallas
spent sixty days at the close of summer in England. In the course
of their visit, they picked up a copy of the London Times of
August 28, 1963, carrying a picture of Mr. and Mrs. Price Daniel
unveiling a Texas plaque on St. James Street, London. The
plaque was placed on the site of the Republic of Texas Legation
from 1842-1845.440
