Horta, May IS.—Tly NC-4 Was tun-
ing up this afternoon, prepartory for
its flight to Ponta Del Gada.
Commander J. H. Towfers, lost in mid-
Atlantic since 5; 15.Saturday morn-
ing, was today reported to the navy
department proceeding toward Ponta
- BerGada under her own power, seven
miles from land. "• i
This message was received at the
navy department this afternoon from
Rear Admiral Jaekson at Ponta Del
Gada. -
“The NC-3 located seven miles
north of Ponta Del Gada, under her
o<wn power.” \
Admiral Jackson’s report was taken
here to mean that Commander Tow-
; recently returned from Europe, where
naval seaplane NC-3, commanded by fop Brent is the" present head of the
Episcopal diocese df Western New
York, but it was as bishop of the
Philippines that he first came prom
inently before the public. It was in
1901 that he went to the Philippines
to supervise the Work of his church
there. He at once became one of the
leading figures in the islands, popu-
lar alike with the natives and - with
Americans of all sects, and a construc-
tive, factor in shaping the process of
adjustment of the island life to United
States rule. Bishop prent is a Cana-
dian by birth, and his first parish was
in Buffalo. He went j to Boston In
on the water by fog, had been driven
northwardi and eastward 1W the storm
until he was able to taki his craft
to safety on the su/face, probably 500
miles from the point Where fog forced
him down, when‘within a short dis-
tance of the landfall at the Azores.
Rear Admiral Jackson’s message as
to the condition of the‘NC-1 said:
“The Fairfax is standing by the
INC-1, 30 miles east of Corvo. Both
wings smashed and one pontoon miss-
ing. Bellihger reports NC-l.will not
be in condition to be made to fly.” *
The message was filed at 12:10 p.
m., Washington time, and while it
made no mention of the Crew, naval
officers were certain that Commander
Towers and . his four men were safe.
Details of the men’s experience on the
plane during thg more than 48 hours'
they spent in the fog and storm were
expected soon after the NC-3 reached
Ponta Del Gada.
