The 1980s are a time of rapid change and the most startling
fact of all is that the American diet is a killer.
The simple fact is that high fat poor nutritional food has
become a way of life.
It is time to wake up and take charge of the quality of food
in all American diets from small children to senior citizens. A
study by two diet experts Drs. David Anderson and William
Jose proved several points.
They studied employees who walked one-half mile or more
per week versus employees who walked less than one-half mile
per week.
The study also included employees who climbed more than
five flights of stairs per week versus employees who climbed
less than five flights of stairs per week.
The initial reaction to this study is usually one of disbelief
that a human possibly could travel less than one-half mile per
week. The fact is Americans will drive the car to the the cor-
ner convenience store instead of walking. The results showed
that the inactive people were at a 1 14 percent higher risk of
reported health claims than the active people.
The fact tha't stands alone in this study is that it takes a very
small exercise commitment to change the average persons
fitness and health percentage significantly.
The facts are on the table. People who don't think they
have the time for health and fitness may be more right than
they know.
Today heart attacks and cancer are affecting a great number
of young people. Only education of the individual by the
private market can combat this killer.
The money spent each year on so-called "fad diets" is (
astronomical and the simple fact still remains that if the diet
is changed to low fat high fiber and the exercise level is mod-
erate and consistent the overall health of Americans will
change and that is no fad.
Americans have survived the "take a pill generation" the
chicken soup cure-all generation the preservatives generation
the pesticides generation and the final outcome is an ounce of
prevention is worth a pound of cure. The facts arc available
and they are not complicated: eat right get plenty of exercise
and drink plenty of fluids. The old saying "It can't happen to
me" is not true. The genetic tendencies of heart trouble and
cancer can be traced through the family tree. The scary part is
what will happen to the future generations if this generation
chooses to ignore these facts. People should be concerned
when the average American knows more about car
maintenance than body maintenance. Just like the man on TV
said "You can pay me now or you can pay me later." Do not
get into a situation where a doctor can make this statement.
Call it fad or call it reality but take time to know all the facts.

You don't have to bo an Olympic champ or a tennis
pro or a marathon runner to be interested In sport3
nutrition. You don't have to eat just to compete. The
right nutrition can boost your body to do its best for
you in whatever athletic activity you choose. Even if
It's just your company softball game or your aerobics
class the activity can be a lot more fun for you if you
have ample energy endurance and strength. And
having fun is really the name of the game.
Meals before an endurance event should abound
In complex carbohydrates: pasta rice potatoes
macaroni and whole-grain bread are ideal.
Breakfast should also Include plenty of car-
bohydrates. Choose pancakes or oatmeal over fattier
fare like bacon and eggs.
Snacks should not consist of sugary simple car-
bohydrates like candy. Crackors popcorn muffins
and breads are better choices.
To ensure complete digestion eat meals at least
threo hours before an event.
Replace fluids lost though perspiration. Plain cool
water Is best. Diluted fruit juice or herbal tea is okay.
But coffee colas and alcohol are dehydrating.
Make sure your vitamin and mineral Intake is up to
par so that your body can burn the fuel you've given
it. For example many people don't get enough of the
major minerals like calcium copper zinc manga-
nese and iron in their diet. A well-balanced supple-
ment like Vita-Lea Multivitamin and Multimineral
Supplement can provide the nutritional insurance ac-
tive people need.
