Track & Field-A Spectator’s Glossary

(distances) are carried to finals.
SHOT PUT—Eight or 12-pound steel or bxass ball
thrown for distance.
POLE—The point at which a runner may pass when
two strides ahead.
TEAM CHAMPION—Team scoring the most points in
a meet.
FOUL—Occurs when a runner has been bumped or cut
off by another runner.
SCRATCH Occurs in long jump when jumper takes
off with foot past takeoff board.
CURVE JUDGE Person responsible for watching
exchange zones in relay.
SPRINTS—100, 220 and 440-yard dashes.
MIDDLE DISTANCE—880-yard run (half-mile).
DISTANCE—One-Mile run.
DOUBLE POINTS—20 for first place, 16 second, 12
third, 8 fourth, 4 fifth and 2 sixth.
FIELD EVENTS—Shot put, discus, long jump, high
jump, pole vault.
RUNNING EVENTS—100, 220, 440, 120 high hurdles,
330 intermediate hurdles, 880, mile, mile relay, 440
relay.
CURVE RACES—220, 440, 880, mile, mile relay, 330
intermediate hurdles.
With Howe High School athletes deeply involved in
competitive track events this year for the first time, Head
Coach Blackie Wade has prepared a list of track terms
that he feels would, be of help to spectators in
understanding some of the finer points of the sport:
PRELIMS—Competition leading to finals in various
events. The first three places in each “heat” or the seven
best times in the prelims qualify for finals.
FINALS—The decisive race by the seven athletes with
the best times.
SCRATCH MEETING—Meeting at which coaches
add, substitute or remove entires.
LANE ASSIGNMENT—Lane designation for runners,
depending on number of lanes on track' There are 36, 38,
40 and 42-inch .lanes.
HEAT—Preliminary races. Number of heats depends
upon the number of teams and athletes entered and also
the number of lanes.
HIGH JUMP—jumping over a bar, with a starting
height of 5’ 2”. Bar is moved up until all entries have
missed a height three times.
LONG JUMP—A jump for dis’ nee. There are three
DISCUS—Four-pound, eight-ounce disk-like object
-thrown from a ring.
WARMUP—Preparing the body to run, jump or throw.
AWARDS—Medals for first, second and third. Trophy
for first place and runner-up spots in 440 and mile relays.
SCORING—10 points for first place, 8 for second, 6 for
third, 4 for fourth, 2 for fifth and 1 for sixth.
INDIVIDUAL EVENT—Each athlete may enter 3 field
and 2 running events or 3 running and 2 field events. No
more than 5.
RELAYS—440 or sprint, 880 or mile.
DISCUS RING—The circle in which the entry must
throw. No part of his body may touch the ring in;the
process.
EXCHANGE ZONE—Area in which the relay baton
must be exchanged.
