The subject of a recent
postgraduate symposium at
the University of Southern
California School of Medicine
was obesity and methods of
treatment.
The incidence of obesity,
currently affecting millions,
is on the increase, and conse-'
quently the physical ailments
resulting from obesity are
taking greater toll among the
populace.
The specific problems
mentioned most frequently
were heart attacks, strokes,
diabetes, circulatory prob-
lems, arthritis and hypogly-
cemia. All of which are either
” brought on by obesity or ag-
gravated by it.
The current scientific con-
sensus for the treatment of
overweight continues to be in
the control of a diet that, of
course, is low in calories but
not too low to cause discour-
agement in following it.
The calories must be low
enough to cause a weight loss
but high enough to allow suf-
ficient nourishment for ener-
gy. This automatically elimi-
nates the 500- and 800-calorie
diets.
The diet must consist of a
balance between protein,
carbohydrates and fat. The
three food categories must
include items that provide all
of the needed vitamins, min-
erals and trace minerals.
The eating of three meals a
day with controlled in-be-
tween snacks is still favored
by many researchers. The
proponents of the snack rou-
tine mentioned the main-
tenance of a high energy level
and the restriction of a build-
up in hunger, causing over-
eating at meal time, as the
basic reason for the six-
times-a-day eating schedule.
Dr. Leonard S. Levitz, from
the - University of Pennsyl-
vania, presented a paper on
behavioral modification in
the treatment of obesity.
His theses involves rear-
ranging one’s environment to
change habitual eating pat-
terns. For example, he cited
the case of a woman path
whose behavior pattern i^d
been monitored and a food
diary kept.
This woman was found to
have concentrated all of her

interests in her kitchen. Her
favorite chair w3s there
along with her radio, televi-
sion and reading material.
Consequently she spent the
majority of her time there —
close to food.
By rearranging her envi-
ronment and getting her out
of the kitchen she became
more aware of her former
concentration on food.
Behavioral consequence
studies, relating to positive or
negative results following
specific behavior patterns,
are also being conducted. The
idea is to change habitual ex-
posure and response pat-
terns.

found that some obese pa-
tients did a lot of eating
standing up, at the sink or
kitchen counters, and that
this pattern tended to cause
them to eat more and at a
faster rate.
The therapy involved seat-
ing the subject and having
them rest their fork on their
plates and pause, at frequent
intervals.
These studies showed that,
if possible, having someone
present while eating not only
improved nutrition but re-
duced consumption. Many
people eating alone neglect a
varied, nutritious diet and
seemed to concentrate on a
few items.

Dear Shirley:
I have a “sweet tooth’’ and
can’t seem to control it. Was I
born with this craving? Is
there anything I can do about
it?
Mrs.H.H.
Dear Mrs. H.H.:
A “sweet tooth” is neither a
dental phenomenon, nor an
inheriting craving. You
caused it by indulging in
sweets, probably since child-
hood. Eating nutritiously at
regular meals often helps
overcome the craving. It is a
h'abit and with self-discipline
it will disappear.
Dear Shirley:
Must all my salads consist
of lettuce? I get tired of let-
tuce salads.
Mrs.G.P.
Dear Mrs. G.P.:
Take cooked vegetables in
place of salads if you prefer.
The main idea is to get vege-
tables into your diet whether
cooked or raw.

James Sutherland, 19, a
Howe High School senior, has
been named first place winner
in the novice physique division
in the Junior Mr. Arkansas
contest.
Sutherland was awarded a
large trophy for that title plus
a smaller trophy for being
adjudged the contestant with
the “best back” in the contest
held two weeks ago at Eldor-
ado, Ark.
For Sutherland,, who has
been lifting weights for only
two years, it was his first meet
ever, and by winning he im-
mediately knocked himself out
of future participation in the
novice division.
From now on he will have to
compete in Teen-Age or
“open” events, starting with
the Teen-Age Mr. Texas
competition at Austin this July
30.
Sutherland said it is his goal
to become eligible to compete
in the Junior Mr. America
contest before he turns 20.
The dream is not so far
fetched, since Sutherland has
one of the best coaches in the
field in Mike Jones of Howe.
Jones is a former holder of the
Mr. Texas title and placed
fourth in the Mr. America
competition.
Sutherland says he became
interested in physical culture a
couple of years ago while us-
ing the universal weightlifting
machine in the field house at
the Howe athletic field as part
of the school’s track program.
“I got interested in going on
with it at that time. You might
say that for some people foot-
ball or baseball is their sport.
This is mine.”
Sutherland stands 5 feet 7
inches tall and weighs 150
pounds. His vital measure-
ments are: chest, 46 inches;
arm, 16; legs, 23; and waist
29 ^.
Sutherland said that he start-
ed his weightlifting program
with the standard plastic
weights about two years ago,
and about one year ago went
to the Olympic type weights.
