Howe’s that...
In case anyone is stopped by a Howe police officer
wearing a blue uniform instead of the light brown you are
used to seeing, don’t be shocked. The Howe Police
Department is now sporting new uniforms which were
bought to replace old, worn out ones. The light brown
uniforms are no longer available. So it is the boys in blue
protecting Howe now.

“Have the courage to be yourself. Don’t be afraid of
others or forget who you are in the business of living.”
“Acknowledge your hidden thoughts and impulses.
Accept yourself with all you imperfections.”
“It is not our problems (which are inevitable) that make
us unhappy; it is our failure to solve them.”
Those statements come from books of advice on how to
live in this world, not just survive. It is good advice to
help each and every one of us to live not just survive.

Taxes is not a very popular subject lately. I dislike taxes
as much as anyone. However, I do like the things that
taxes bring me - good roads, good schools, police
protection, fire departments, etc.
I feel that in the last few months there has been an over
reaction to high taxes. Sure taxes are getting higher, but
then so is everything...the cost of good roads, good
schools, etc.
As citizens we need to help hold the line on excessive
spending by government agencies, but we cannot cut out
everything. That would be like throwing out the baby
with the bath water.
To my way of thinking, our local government and school
board are doing their best to keep taxes down. It’s the
big guy that we need to watch. After all, who is it that
spends thousands of dollars to research things like how
many insects are there in this county as compared to
another or some other such foolish project.
The solution is to get involved in your govenment as
much as possible. Write your congressman and senators.
Let your opinions be known. And don’t forget to vote in
all elections - big or small. Be an informed voter. Don’t
vote for a nice smile or a glib tongue. Know the issues
and how the candidates feel about them.
We have another election coming up in November. So
do your homework before election day.
Government is the people working together. Join in.
Cast your vote.
There is no free lunch. Everything that is worth
anything has some kind of price tag.
Often we hear people extolling this method or that as
the one for instant success. As my grandpappy used to
say, “There’s no such animal” as instant success.
It takes work. Sometimes it’s hard work. Sometimes it is
not so hard, but it’s still work.
Too many people want the easy way out. They aren’t
interested in honest, hard labor. Unless you were born a
Kennedy or Rockefellar, you won’t get rich without a
little work and maybe even a lot of work.

TOUCHDOWN against the Panthers making the score
20 -12. Joyous Bulldogs are wearing the black jerseys.
Final score was 28-12.
TROMP VAN ALSTYNE, 28-12
VICTORY! Howe Bulldogs start the game against Van
Alstyne right by breaking through the “victory banner”
at Friday night’s game.
The Howe Bulldogs handed
Van Alstyne a crushing
defeat Friday night at Howe
with a score of 28-12.
The Van Alstyne Panthers
began the scoring when
Howe fumbled on the kick-
off and the Panthers scored
a touchdown with just 49
seconds ticked off the clock.
The point-after kick failed
giving Van Alstyne an early
lead of 6-0.
Howe then began a
methodical nine-play drive
on the ground from its 34 to
the Van Alstyne 24, but a
fumble gave the ball to Van
Alstyne.
Fumbles were traded back
and forth for a while be-
tween the two teams until
late in the first quarter Jeff
Murdock took the ball from
Howe’s 20 and ran 51 yards
into Panther territory. Two
plays later Mark Harper took
the handoff from Murdock
and ran the remaining 21
yards for a touchdown with
2:19 left in the first quarter.
Ken Helvey was successful o
on the run for the extra
points.
During the second quarter
Helvey, Harper, and David
Monk were the ball carriers,
as Murdock led the team
downfield. With 5:34 left in
the first half of the game,
Helvey caught the touch-
down pass from Murdock.
The point-after kick failed
and Howe led 14-6 as the
first half of the game was
over.
The second half of the
game was opened with a
90-yard kickoff return by
Panther Eric McKinney for
another Van Alstyne touch-
down. Howe defense
thought they had downed
McKinney, but he managed
to slip through and score.
The two-point conversion
was stopped by the Bulldogs
Howe next moved the ball
to Van Alstyne 23, but were
unable to get to the end
zone.
Van Alstyne was able to
gain only a yard and was
forced to punt to Howe.
Mark Dykes substituted for
Murdock as quarterback and
broke the Panthers with a
35-yard run to the Panther
25. Helvey carried 1 the ball
on the next two plays and
scored a touchdown with
10:34 left in the game. Howe
was leading now, 20-12.
As the fourth quarter con-
tinued, Murdock led a seven
play, 48-yard drive down the
field. A penalty pushed the
Bulldogs back with a third
down and 29 yards to go
situation. Murdock handed
the ball to Monk, who
smashed the Panther de-
fense and ran 43 yards for

7th Grade
Wins Again
The 7th grade football team
beat Van Alstyne last
Thursday, 12-8. They were
behind at the half, 8-6, but
scored again late in the third
quarter for the win. Steve
Dobbins scored the first
touchdown.
The 8th grade team lost,
20-0. The score was 8-0 at
the half and Howe gave up
two touchdowns in the
second half. “They didn’t
play with the same enthu-
siasm they have been play-
ing with,” said Principal and
Coach Tom Skipworth.
Offensively Brad Nass,
Barry Dunn, Jeff Sargent,
and Mark Stonebarger were
standouts. For the defensive
Dunn, Larry Hawthorne, and
David Carlson played well.
They go up against Honey
Grove, tonight, Oct. 19,
beginning at 5 p.m.

the touchdown. Monk also
made the two-point conver
sion, making it 28-12 with
3:35 left in the game.
Howe is now 1-2 in district
play and will face Honey
Grove there Friday night at
7;30 p.m.
Honey Grove has been
defeated in all their games
this year and also lost all ten
It was Friday the 13th for
Van Alstyne. After leaving
the Howe Bulldog pit, they
probably felt more like a
Pink Panther or just another
Alley Cat.
Our varsity team did what
we knew they were capable
of doing in winning the
South Grayson County
championship again this
year. We extend congratu-
lations and hope you have
started a trend for the for
the rest of the season.
The Junior Varsity were
successful Panther hunters
too. The 7-0 victory wasn’t
the real story as the score
indicates. Our future team
did a great job with the
offensive finding the goal
line.
THe defense held Van in
check. With the keyed up
lineman coming up with
some dance steps we hadn’t
seen before.
Our junior high split their
games - the 7th grade win-
ing and the 8th grade losing.
We want to give special
recognition to Leon Thornhill
in his working with Coach
Skipworth and junior high
football. They look good.
On Thursday, the Honey
Grove Warriors will be
coming to Howe. The 7th
grade team’s game will
probably start at 4:45, start-
ing a little early in order to
complete the game. The
traveling distance for the
visiting team is considered.
The 8th grade and JV games
will follow.
All three games are to be
filmed and will be shown at
Tuesday night’s Athletic
Booster Club meeting.
games last year. They, have
11 returning lettermen from
last year’s team. Although
they were a Class A power a
few years back, they have
not done too well in recent
battles. In district play they
have been defeated by
Leonard (33-8), Bells (19-7),
and Cooper (16-6).
The Varsity team will
journey to Honey Grove Fri-
day night. We need this one.
There seems no way. to
really describe how good our
flashy Howe High School
Band, Cheerleaders, and
high stepping Highlighters
are. They are real cham-
pions and deserve our
attention at half time. They
are great.
The victory light is on.
School spirit is high. Thanks
to all the Mom’s that attend
the Booster Club meetings.
Would you believe you lop-
sidely out number the Dads
in attendance. He probably
is home with an old football
injury.
See you at the games.
