Tom Cats Beat Gunter, 14-6
The Tom Bean Tomcats
beat Gunter, 14-6, in a non-
district game played in Tom
Bean Friday night.
Tom Bean’s touchdowns
came on long drives in the
first and third quarters of
the game.
Gunter scored in the fourth
period and moved to the
Tom Bean eight yard line
with 1:30 left in the game
but was stopped by a fumble
In the first quarter Jim
Bruton finished a 63-yard
drive on Tom Bean’s first
possession with a 14-yard
touchdown run. The kick for
the extra point failed.
In the third quarter the
Tomcats started with a 57-
yard drive which ended with
Eddie Chastain breaking fro
a 30-yard touchdown run.
John Harvey made a suc-
cessful! run for the two
points bringing the score to
14-0.
Gunter got on the board in
the fourth period with a
17-yard pass play from Ricky
Morgan to Mike Watson.
The Tomcat defense was
led by Kyle Malone, Dennis
Willis, John Harvey, Jeff
Troxtell, and Jim Bruton.
Offensive leaders included
Jack Carnell and Rick
Roberts.
Pee Wees Get First Win
The Tom Bean Pee Wee
football team gots its first
win of the season Saturday,
Oct. 14, beating Whitesboro
#2 20-0 in Whitesboro.
Dwayne DeBerry scored
two touchdowns on end
sweep runs and quarterback
Greg Reynolds scored on a
quarterback sneak. Scott
Bell ran the two point con-
version on the final score to
make it 20-0.
Tom Bean played great
defense with Marlon Lang-
ford, Junior Perez, Dwayne
DeBerry, Joey Stephens,
Robert Doniho, Kenneth
Krucko, Bobby Grant, Billy
Garner, John Hill, and Alan
Hart all making numerous
individual plays. The coach
gave credit to his whole
team as each and everyone
played a fine game.
The record is one win, four
losses, and one tie. A total
of 30 points have been
scored against them all sea-
son.
Next game is against S&S

Saturday, Oct. 21, at 1:00
p.m.
Craft Club
The Tom Bean Craft Club
met Oct. 3 in the home of
Mrs. Lucille Teague and saw
a demonstration of nail care
products.
There vyas also a display of
brooms, wall hangings and
wreaths made of straw and
dried flowers, a hand puppet
and an afghan made of left-
over yarn.
Thirteen members and two
guests were served refresh-
ments. The next meeting
will be Nov. 7 in the home of
Mrs. T.B. Wilson.
There are over six million
more women of voting
age than there are men.
This week Tom Bean
travels to Lone Oak to
resume district battle. The
Tomcats are 1-0 for district
play.
4-H To Sell
“Tootsie Roll
Banks”
The Tom Bean 4-H Club
members will be conducting
a fund-raising activity Sat-
urday, October 21, from 9:00
to 12:00.
The 4-H’ers will be selling
“Tootsie Roll Banks’’ to
support their King and
Queen candidates for the
Share-the-Fun. The club in
the county that raises the
most money wins the county
contest.
Tom Bean 4-H Club organ-
ization leader is Mrs. Sandy
Merriman; club president,
Stacy Sudderth; vice-
presideny, Robbie Anderson
secretary, Cindy Worsham;
council delegate, Craig
Crismon; treasurer, Rhonda
Malone; and alternate coun-
cil delegate, Julie Hollensed
The club meets the first
Monday of each month at
7:00 p.m. in the Tom Bean
United Methodist Church
Fellowship Hall.
Culture Club
The Tom Bean Culture
Club held a salad iuncheon
on Oct. 6 in the home of club
president Martha Freeman.
The group discussed the
1978-79 programs led by
Lucille Teague, program
chairman.
Sixteen members were in
attendance at the meeting.
Fire Dept.
To Conduct
Training Session
The Tom Bean Fire Dept,
had their regular meeting on
Oct. 9 at city hall. They will
conduct a training session at
the next meeting, Oct. 23,
for new members. This
meeting will be at 6:00.
Also dicussed was the
addition of a larger pipe for
the water pipe to fill up the
trucks.
Booster Club
The Booster Club had their
weekly meeting Tuesday,
Oct. 10, at the school cafe-
torium. They have pur-
chased a juke box for the
cafetorium. All proceeds go
to the Booster Club.
A pizza party will be held
after the game Friday night.
T-Shirts have been ordered
and will be in next week.
Cowbells have been pur-
chased for the next game.

J’Lee Wyatt Bumpus cele-
brated his “half birthday”
on Oct. 12 when he was six
months old. Parents are Mr.
and Mrs. Jack Bumpas.
Mrs. Bumpas teaches
English at Tom Bean.
Homemaking
Field Trip
The Tom Bean Homemak-
ing class took a field trip to
Sherman on Tuesday, Oct.
10. They visited Hickory
Farms at the Sher-Den Mall
and sampled cheeses and
sausages. THey next visited
Krogers. After lunch they
stopped at Tom Thumb
before returning to Tom
Bean.

retired farmer of Tom Bean,
at Earnheart Funeral Chapel
in Whitewright, conducted
by A.C. Quinn and Don
’f Drape, Church of Christ
ministers and the Rev.
Harry Stanley, a Baptist
minister.
Mr. Wortham was born in?
Tom Bean, son of the late
Mr. and Mrs. R.H.
Wortham and married Opal
Bellows on Oct. 17, 1928 in
Kentucky. He was a member
of the Tom Bean Baptist
Church.
Surviving are wife; daugh-
ter, Mrs. Jane Walker of
Midland; brother, John
Wortham of Tom Bean; sis-
ters, Mrs. BEn Vincent and
Mrs. Bennie Coker, both of
Sherman and Mrs. Wanda ■
Evans of Dallas; and three
grandchildren.

Guy A. Sweatt Jr. of San
Antonio is a weekend cook
who took advantage of seven
years of backyard cooking
experience to defeat 10
other contestants at the
Memorial City Shopping
Center.
Sweatt won $100 and the
opp ortunity to represent
Texas at the National Pork
Cookout King Contest next
June. He was sponsored by
the Hill Country Pork
Producers Association.
The Texas Pork
Producers Association and
the Texas Department of
Agriculture (TDA) sponsored
the contest.
Runner-up was Perry F.
Morris Jr. of Alta Loma for
his recipe, Apple-Pineapple
Stuffed Pork Chops. Morris
received $50. His sponsor
was the Rolling Plains Pork
Producers Association.
Frank H. Guenther of
Seguin won the
Showmanship Award and
$25. The award goes to the
cook with the most flair.
