Tower beckons students
to Chapel with hymns
Jason Craddock
Student Reporter
The Tower of Light contin-
ues to play a variety of hymns
before Chapel as a result of a
technological upgrade to the
electronic bell system.
The Verdin Bell Company
establlshedftin 1842 is the
company behind the Tower of
Light's sounds said Martha
Renfro assistant to the dean of
the College of Biblical Studies.
According to the company's
Web site wvvtv.verdin.com the
Verdin Singing Tower which is
housed in the Tower of Light
is an authentic recreation of
carillon bells through digital
sampling.
"The playing of hymns on
carillon bells calls attention to
the church and spreads its
message far beyond the con-
fines of the church yard" the
site says.
"To the wider community
bells are the voice of the
church proclaiming thd glory
of God."
Funds for the original sys-
tem Avere .donated when the
building was built in '.1989.
That' system relied on cassette
tapes.
"Technology has changed a
lot in 11 years.r Renfro said.
"That tape system worked well
for quite a while but we had to
have it worked on several
times'. It finally got to the point
where it was not working very
well."
In 1998 more funds were
donated by the original donor
to upgrade to the current sys-
tem. Renfro said that the sys-
tem can be programmed more
easily and that the digital sys-
tem will not wear down.
The system contains a vari-
ety of chips that can be
plugged in so different hymns
can play through the loud-
speakers. Renfro said someone said
the Tower of Light should play
hymns during the funeral of
Dr. Jim Mankln associate pro-
fessor and former chair of the
Department of Undergraduate
Bible and Ministry.
Mankin died Dec. 16
1998 and had requested that
hymns be played during his
service.
After its first use during
Mankin's funeral some
thought it was a good idea to
play a call to worship consist-
ing of several hymns on the
bell system every day before
Chapel Renfro said.
Some students say they
enjoy the music the Tower of
Light brings.
"1 enjoy the music; I think it
is an uplifting part of my day"
said Brad Holloway senior
finance major from Houston.
Caley Johns junior human
development and family stud-
ies major from Fort Worth
agreed with Holloway.
"1 like the music" she said.
"It Is different and fun."
Some other students how-
ever express mixed feelings.
"1 enjoy the bells but 1 don't
understand why they do it just
after Homecoming or during
Lectureship" said Brad
Wilkinson junior human com-
munication major from
Bloomington Minn. "1 think
they should do it all the time to
be a tradition."
Minor programming prob-
lems prevent the bells from
playing every day; Renfro said.
"We have had some prob-
lems jUst learning how to pro-
gram it and keep it going and
then being able to change the
hymns so we don't have to play
the same ones over and over
every day" she said. "I think
that we have about got It now
so that we can be able to do
that."
We are now faking applications for full time
and part time waitstaff.
