Will Sidetrack Senator Looney.
Austin, Feb. 10.—It is learned
here this morning that the Bailey
forces in the state are getting
ready to pull Senator Looney out
of the race for attorney general
so ns to unite on a strong lawver
in Central Texas, who is a hide-
bound prohibitionist. The Bailey
crowd are not at all satisfied with
Looney and, according to reports,
they are getting ready to swap
horses in the middle of the
stream. This lawyer has had
political ambitions for a number
of years, and two years ago he
pulled out of the race for a high
state office.
Retributive justive has played
it’s part, and Judge James Hargis
is no more. For .Judge Hargis,
who has been a party to many it
feud and assassination in Breath-
ett county, Kentucky, to diqof an
assin’s hands is no surprise, but
for a man who has successfully
defied men and the law and
dominated the county to die at the
hands of one of his offspring is
enough to make one pause and
think. It is an inexorable law
■that a man reaps- - what- he sows.

Things are not often just as we
would like to have them, and sur-
rounding circumstances not al-
ways as we imagine or hear they
are, and very often if wo knew
the exact condition and state of
affairs our minds and opinions
would be the reverse to what they
were without a knowledge of
facts.

make it a better success. This
has been the greatest year in the
history of Cooper schools, yet
they7 can be made better and we
are going to do it. Will you help?
Now this is merelv offered as a
bint, and while we presume many
will read it, it is hoped some will
think about it, and at least a few
be induced to act upon it and visit
our schools at least occasionally.

Some of our exchanges are run-
ning an ad entitled “Commission-
er Smith vs. The Standard Oil
Company,” credited to the Rail-
road World of Jan. 3, IPOS. It is
an ingenious article defending
tile Standard Oil Company lUlu
criticising Judge Landis and
President Roosevelt in particular.
President Roosevelt evidently be-
came aroused on account of such
publications, for in his recent
famous message he dealt severely
with paid writers of newspapers,
magazines anil books.—McKin-
ney Examiner.
We have noticed that the pa-
pers that have publishsd this
article have generally run it as
reading matter, without any
marks to indicate that it is paid
for. The article is simply a de-
fense of the Standard Oil Com-
pany, and sent out with the in-
tention of deceiving the people.

Mr. Lane needs no introduction

having lived here for years. He
has tilled the county attorney’s
office for two terms, and he feels
that, by close attention to the
duties of that office- he merits the
higher honor of county judge.
He thus submik-i his name to the

Senator Culberson’s bill to
create a new division of the
Northern Judicial District of Tex-
as and to provide for terms of
court at Amarillo now needs only
the Presidents signature to make
it a law.
. As it passed the Senate the bill
left it to the Judge to prescribe
when the terms ol court should
be held at Amarillo. The House
amended this section prescribing
that the terms of court should
begin thq third Monday of April
and the fourth Monday of Sep-
tember each year. This change
necessitated a reference of the
bill to a conference committee.
The conference commitee agreed
to the House’s amendment, and
both the Senate and House have
adopted the conference report,
so that only the President’s ap-
proval is needed to assume the
holding of Federal Court at Am-
arillo. _
