“Who knows?” the Mrs. con-

In the meantime, I’m going ta

TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS
Tractor accidents kill about
1,000 farmers every year, ac-
cording to the 1956 edition of
“Accident Facts,” the statistical
yearbook of the National Safety
Council, which is just off the
press. One-third of the tractor
deaths occur in highway acci-
dents while the tractor is being
moved from one place to an-
other.
KNOW YOUR POLICE DEPARTMENT
By John J. Amend
Assistant Chief of Police, Amarillo, Texas
of his company.
The local agent introduced
the Denver official at the police
station. The visitor showed a
genuine interest in our new
building, and was taken on an
inspection tour during which
time he observed the comunica-
tions section, jail and detention
area, kitchen, polygraph ex-
amination in progress, records,
and all the many activities that
are necessary to operate a law
enforcement agency.
At the end of the inspection
tour, he expressed surprise at
the number of functions neces-
sary to operate a police depart-
ment. He thought all a police
department did was pick up
people and put them in jail!
More recently, a young moth-
er together with her three chil-
dren and three young brothers
and sisters stopped in Amarillo
en route from Oklahoma to Los
Angeles.. They had run out of
money, and were parked in the
downtown area awaiting re-
sponse from a telegram to Los
Angeles; for necessary funds to
continue their journey.
An officer spotted these seven
people waiting in their car,
and suggested that they ac-
company him to police head-
quarters where they would be
more comfortable.
They welcomed the opportun-
ity to be sheltered from the
sweltering sun, but were a little
reluctant about the official sur-
roundings.
Upon arrival at the station,
they were escorted to the air
conditioned lounge where they
There are many people who
are firm in their convictions
that the sole activity of the
police is to play “cops and rob-
bers” every day.
Nothing could be further from
the truth!
There’s the officer who helps
the tourist find his misparked
automobile; the one who de-
livers emergency messages, finds
friends, relatives and loved
ones for those who are passing
through town, and a thousand
and one other services which
Lave no relation to the job1 of
enforcing the law.
Recently, a prominent official
of a leading insurance firm
whose home office is in Dtenver
had occasion to visit Amarillo
on business.
During the course of his visit,
he was issued a citation for
overparking. He was accom-
panied to the municipal police
building to make a disposition
of the citation in Corporation
Court by a local representative

settled on comfortable divans.
A meal was prepared and served
to them in the jail area, and
the children were supplied with
milk purchased by officers.
Shower facilities in a vacant
detention cell were also made
available to the group.
After their immediate com-
fort had been established, the
station lieutenant attempted to
determine the reason for the
delayed response to the tele-
gram they had sent requesting
money. Finally, a long distance
call was made to Los Angeles
at no expense to the group.
An hour and a half later, the
funds were delivered and they
were on their way.
The young mother expressed
her amazement at the attitude
taken by the officers toward her
plight and the facilities made
available. She, like the insur-
ance executive, thought that
policemen merely put people in
jail.
These are examples of peo-
ple who have never had occasion
or reason to contact one of the
most important services of their
municipal government. How
many thousands more there
must be who have no opinion
of their police department sim-
ply because there has never
been a stimulus to create an
opinion.
It behooves the citizen to
acquaint himself with the fa-
cilities of his local law enforce-
ment agency. . Police officials
welcome the curiosity of the
citizens they serve.
And the citizen will find a
pleasant and interesting sur-
prise in store for him if he sets
an hour or so aside tomorrow
to see what is required to keep
his police department operating
twenty-four hours a day.

Fresh as a rose with the dew still on it, and typical of this
summer’s cool, crisp fashion look, is this attractive and washable
party cotton. A Jerry Parnis design in sheer, opaque cotton, the
heart-shaped neckline and Empire bodice? are outlined in tiny
white chalk beads and occasional rhinestones. Modern science
helps keep this season’s costumes bright and fresh as new with a
minimum of care. A new chlorine dry bleach in bead form that is
guaranteed not to harm fabrics will maintain the fresh prettiness
of the pink and white shadow print for many seasons to come.
Simply launder with detergent, plus the bleach-beads.. Rinse
thoroughly. When ironing around the neck and bodice, place. a
turkish towel under trimming and iron gently on wrong side.
